Regional Stud

Breeders
Need an opinion on a stud that is available...The name is Cielo City by Carson City out of a Bailjumper mare. He has won $144,000 +, but no blacktype finishes. 42-8-8-3. Chips in the ankle and an old fracture has stopped his racing. He is a real looker.

Is he a possibility for a regional sire? Is the pedigree good enough to merit bringing him to stud?

Thanks,
Dave

Depends on what you are trying to accomplish. From a quick glance at the pedigree i would say it would be difficult to attract outside mares. No idea what his times were like in the 8 wins. I would think he would be a long shot, unless you have a number of mares that you think would fit him.

What region/market are you in? I had a Conquistador Cielo stallion and got zero interest in him in the Oklahoma/Texas region. Regional markets can be tricky especially with the big KY farms dumping their unmarketable studs into the regional markets.

I think not really. His dam line is pretty unexciting.

20dourmdd, as a racing sire prospect probably not. His pedigree doesn't offer strong enough appeal to attract many breeders with racing in mind, and in addition to that, his half-sister produced a colt named Galopin Charger (by Devil's Bag) that already stands next door in Michigan and so already is offering very similar bloodlines to the regional market.

However, as a sporthorse sire, you may have some possibilities. Cielo City's dam, Sock City, a SW/MSP mare herself, is a half-sister to Wind Splitter, GSW/GSP and who competed in the 1989 Kentucky Derby (ran 11th). His own half-sister Mockingbird Valley by Affirmed (out of the same dam as Galopin Charger mentioned above) also produced a spotted sabino, Struttin on Union (by Phone Trick), that sold for $57K as a preferred yearling at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga August 2004 sale. Cielo City's race record indicates hard-knocker (42:8-8-3) , and if he has the looks, he might be marketable to the sporthorse industry, especially if he throws color like his half-sis. His pedigree does appear to have individuals with athletism, soundness and stamina necessary to make a good sporthorse prospect. If he has the physical build and the temperament for a sporthorse, it might be worth investigating.

That being said, if you're thinking of breeding to race, you might consider test mating him to a few of your own mares. He is, after all, the son of a Horse of the Year and Belmont winner, out of a stakeswinner who is half to a Kentucky Derby finalist and although that in itself is not enough to create commercial appeal, it's difficult to tell how much quality he may have inherited and could very well pass on.

(All information provided is from the database and should be verified.)

Just my two cents worth.
