Leading Freshman Sire of 2006?

Postby TomFool » Mon Jan 30, 2006 10:49 pm

I know its early but who ya got? Here is my top 5
1 Orientate
2 Street Cry
3 Johannesburg
4 Came Home
5 Officer

While not really subpar this years freshman class is a bit unappealing as a whole with no real standouts even though I think my top two have a chance to be. Buddah & Include are the other obvious choices not in my top 5. A horse I really like is Tribal Rule & think Snow Ridge, Greame Hall & Thundrello can make an impact. The major flops of this bunch I believe will be Red Bullet & Millennium Wind. Mizzan Mast will do ok I think but it will be later. Thoughts

My favorites from what I saw at the 2005 sales, in no particular order:

Snow Ridge
Include
Officer
Came Home

Jump Start could be a sleeper.

One of my favorite individuals of the year was a Yonaguska colt (out of a mare called Ink on Paper), which I'm waiting for them to name.

And Johannesburg has more two-yr-olds than anybody, so if it were a contest, it would hard not to pick him.

Every so often there is a REALLY good break out freshman sire in FL so you have to keep an eye on them. I also agree that it will be hard to NOT take Johannesburg just for the number of mares he bred. With that in mind, my preferences (in order):

Texas Glitter (ridiculously fast and SOUND horse ... with all those 2yo races to flood in FL)

Came Home

Forbidden Apple (NICE female family for getting sires. My only concern is that he's a Pleasant Colony -- will they mature fast enough?)

Street Cry

Johannesburg

Honorable mention to:

Malabar Gold

Littleexpectations

Okay none of these stallions I like, but I have a feeling they'll be up there.
1. Johannesburg (he has like a million foals)
2. Buddha (see above)
3. Yonaguska (they'll run early)
4. Graeme Hall (my Florida special but may be supplanted by Wheelaway up north)
5. Van Nistlerooy (again a million foals)

Now for the five I'll actually be watching.
1. E Dubai
2. Officer
3. Mizzen Mast
4. Include
5. Leelanau

Include is on some of your lists for leading freshman sire?? He does throw a beautiful yearling but Include didn't really get good until he was 4 and he is a son of Broad Brush who is also not known for producing 2 year old runners. I think we will have to wait to see the best of the Includes when they are older.

i bought an officer colt at keeneland officer x macarena macarena (gone west) and although he looked a bit narrow at the sales he has done quite well since then. i'll be hoping both officer and him do well in 2006

Littleexpectations because the Valid Appeals are born to surprise everyone. First Valid expectations then Successful Appeal and last year BL's Appeal with hardly any foals got off to a superb start. Speed and Tough a great combination.

Agreed. Had he been in Florida, he would have bumped Johannesburg from my list. With him in Texas ... I'm not sure how to read it.

Ok, checking back here...

I still feel good on Officer and Include.

Snow Ridge is at least getting winners, although I haven't seen any of them personally.

Came Home has been non-existant.

And I guess Jump Start is still a sleeper, doing ok.

The Jburgs are a little better than I gave credit for.

Ah, what're ya complainin' about? You're doing better than me ;)

Ill-bred wrote:I still feel good on Officer and Include.

I should think so since they're currently sitting 1st and 3rd on the Frosh sire's list.

Ill-bred wrote:Snow Ridge is at least getting winners, although I haven't seen any of them personally.

15th ... 8 winner

Ill-bred wrote:Came Home has been non-existant.

Not really. 17th on the Frosh list. 18 starters, 4 winners.

Ill-bred wrote:And I guess Jump Start is still a sleeper, doing ok.

12th. 32 starters, 11 winners. That's not too bad.

Mine are the ones treading water:

Texas Glitter -- 46th

Came Home -- 17th

Forbidden Apple -- 59th

Street Cry -- 10th

Johannesburg -- 2nd

Honorable mention to:

Malabar Gold -- unranked

Littleexpectations --9th

My top would be

Officer
Johannesburg
Include
Jump Start

Not sure on the # 5 yet. I think it will be a close one between the top two but if anyone besides a Ashford Stallion gets it then in my opinion they are deserve it as they will have less foals in the crop to have given them that title.

Sam-

Well, Came Home hasn't been completely invisible, but I don't think he's lived up to anyone's expectations. His fee drops from $40,000 to $25,000 for next year.

Yeah, I saw that. $25k is probably a better level for him anyway. Makes me nervous about Proud Citizen's chances next year though.
