Lost Soldier
I am curious about people's oppinion of Lost Soldier. Aside from price or value, What do you think about his conformation and his ability as a sire? I've read a lot of comments in other posts and forums about Lost in the Fog being out of the ordinary. Does anyone her particularly like or dislike Lost Soldier?
hi innisfail
You ask for opinions re: Lost Soldier.
I suggest that any son of Danzig (out of a Secretariat mare no less) that can sire a champion (as in the case of his brilliant son Lost In The Fog) is certainly worthy of some attention.
That said...Lost Soldier does not sire an impressive percentage of stakes-winners (and he's had five crops to race thus far and in excess of 260 named foals of racing age thru 2005)...plus...it's extremely rare when he gets a graded winner. It's probably reasonable to conclude that without Lost In The Fog in action, Lost Soldier might be all but forgotten by many (unless he comes up with another quality runner that can pick up the slack). Can't lose sigtht of the fact that theres little advertising or promotion on behalf of LS, but right now Lost In The Fog speaks loudly on behalf of his sire.
I understand that Lost Soldier has some issues that limit the number of mares he can handle...but if he fits a mare...and his breeding issues (whatever they are) don't create an insurmountable obstacle in the decision-making process...he's probably worth a closer look.
Gotta consider also...his best might still be yet to come; but at this point in his career I'd recommend make a decision based on what he has done...and Lost In The Fog aside, that's arguably not much...
...but Lost In The Fog is not aside...hmmm.
Respectfully
