Has anyone seen him in person, or have any opinions on him.
Is it unusual to have a jump in stud fee before the first crop hits the ground?

I've seen him and he's a very good looking, although not entirely correct horse. His race record certainly can't be argued with.
Other recent stallions who have had their stud fees go up before they had any offspring to race are Vindication, Proud Citizen, and Buddha. In the case of the first two, it was because the farms were turning a substantial number of mares away at the lower price. I believe Buddha's stud fee was raised based on his progeny's strong prices at the sales.

I suspect as weanlings hit the ground and start tongues wagging, some stallion farms reprice their seasons accordingly. If they believe the foals are grand, the fee goes up. If they are crooked and ugly, they hope no one notices for awhile. Most stallions are not successful as sires of runners, but some can get some money for their owners during the glory years of the weanling and yearling sales if the foals are gorgeous.
