Pedigree Query

Anyone here breeding to him this year? Just wondering what people think of him? Apparently he'll be shuttling to New Zealand and I've had some questions from people about his ability to throw a good turf runner. They are leary of his turf to dirt change.

Got a question for anyone about his being "shuttled to New Zealand." Does this mean he'll be there permanently, or just for this year's breeding season? The way I understood it, he was to stand at Crestwood Farm in Kentucky. I'm very fond of Castledale - he won The Santa Anita Derby in 2004 - the first time I ever saw a "live" race at SA. Thanks.

Castledale is at Crestwood (he looks great) for the Northern Hemisphere breeding season and will be headed to NZ for the Southern Hemisphere season. If he does well here, I presume they'll want to keep him. But, if he doesn't go over well in the US, NZ may want him permanently.

I sure hope he doesn't wind up in New Zealand permanently! Nothing against New Zealand, but I was hoping to eventually visit him at Crestwood. I'm lucky I got to "meet" him at Tommy Town Farms here in California, before he was shipped out to Kentucky. He's really beautiful!

Te Runga have purchased his Southern Hempshere rights. Which means he'll do th northern season then come down to us either for as long as the rights are purchased or one or the other may be the other crowd out if he proves better in one country.

Castledale has 11 crosses of (Phalaris) and it would be best to breed mares that have only 6 crosses of (Phalaris) or less.

I would breed mares that have an abundance of non-(Phalairs) sire lines in their 5 generation pedigree.

I booked my mare Ceasefire to him- has anyone else booked to him?

Castledale has 14 crosses of Phalaris in 9 generations. He has none in 5 generations. Very few do. Two of the most successful sires in the last 100 years, Northern Dancer and Mr. Prospector, both spring from the Phalaris sire line. So rather than choosing Phalaris, or Eclipse, it's time to update and identify today's unsound lines as ND & Mr. P, eh? Better to be sure it is defective material being produced before buying sporthorse mares to produce supposedly sounder racehorses so that your descendants may finally produce a racetrack winner. Ever wonder if race horses would suddenly get sounder if the purses were increased and the return was better keeping them on the racetrack rather than in the breeding shed? Ever think of the response of a 35-year-old neophyte in the year 2050 when upon entering the thoroughbred game he is told that the KY Derby once had a purse similar to many other stakes races, and that foreign stakes were much higher? Response---No way! You've got to be kidding!!
