OK - Anybody like Marco Bay now?
Buzzard's Bay had a nice win today - over $800K in winnings. Why is Marco so overlooked?
Horses are pure love.
Why Marco Bay is overlooked
Marco Bay is overlooked because of pedigree because he is not Seattle Slew, Northern Dancer, Mr. Propector,Storm Cat, Unbridled, and the list goes on because his pedigree is not commercial and that does not make him a bad stallion. Look how Siphon was promoted in comparison to Marco Bay. Siphon does not have that attractive American pedigree but he was very well promoted. Siphon promoted himself by winning the Santa Anita H. People spent money to breed to him because he had a couple of nice horses in his first couple crops. People spend money to breed to a horse who gets the big horse but often people overpay. Marco Bay has had a couple of nice horses in Buzzards Bay, Marco's Word, and Bay Street Gal. For the price of $3500 Marco Bay does offer value.

Marco Bay is actually listed in the 2006 register for $3,000. However, he is listed as in Florida and the farm didn't put in even a stat page so there's really no listing at all. As with everything, out of sight, out of mind. If people can't Easily find the horse, they won't find him at all. They haven't updated the information on the query board, either, so there is not even a contact.

The story on this stallion is kind of a soap opera. The owners were going to stand him in Oxford, PA, but when Buzzards Bay won the SA Derby they decided to keep him at Hidden Hills Farm in Ocala, FL. In August of 2005 the owner, Lee Maloy of HHF was murdered by a disgruntled employee at his construction site. So it looks like they moved him to Sugar Oaks Farm probably to avoid estate problems.(?)
I have put the contact information on his ped site.

Marco Bay has had more than one good horse
Marco Bay has had more than 1 good horse
Buzzard's Bay out of a Senaca Jones mare-earned $816,971
Bay Street Gal out of a High Counsel mare-earned $359,332
Marco's Word out of a Verbatim mare-earned $344,085
Not bad for a stallion standing for $3,000
High Counsel and Seneca Jones are not exactly leading the broodmare sires list.

Marco Bay has sired 1 G1 winner and 2 other stakes winners; although he has not had many opportunities, he is 16 years old and does not have the brightest future.
By the way, comparing Marco Bay to Siphon is apples and oranges. Siphon went to stud as a multiple G1 winner with a tremendous race record, one of the best older horses in the world. Siphon deserved to be standing in KY and promoted accordingly. Siphon has sired a G1 winner but has been a disappointment by anyone's measure. Marco Bay was a stakes winner that managed to place in a $75,000 G3 race. Marco Bay deserved exactly the opportunities he received.
If one breeds to Marco Bay, one should be breeding to race because the offspring will have no commercial value. And if one is breeding to race there are a number of better alternatives at the same price point.
