Seemed like he did get hurt but they figured he'd get better soon from whatever it was. At least that's what's coming through my foggy mind at the moment. I'll have to look it up to see in what way he might've had a problem.
PS. Ok I just read he had a chip in his right front ankle and they removed it. Makes you wonder what else's goin on. I don't think it's what they claimed..go read the quote, it just sounds so fishy. They said they'd miss several key races which frankly I don't think ruins a horse's BCC chances to not catch a race in, say, April or May, even if it does push you off track. It's not like you've got a 3yo trying for the Derby. This is an older horse. I don't like it when owners blow smoke up my rear end...well, without asking first at any rate.
I'm sure someone will tell me I'm being unfair to them but it sounds like crap to me. Tiznow didn't have all of his 3yo year to prepare for the Classic but won it anyway and at 4 he did it with numerous setbacks. http://news.bloodhorse.com/viewstory.asp?id=32990 I'm wondering if there's some sort of arthritis or cartilidge issues. Maybe another physical problem they don't wanna talk about or it'll hurt his stud value with talk of unsoundness but who knows. Fee to be announced later they said.

He chipped an ankle and when they took it out the surgeon felt the recovery would take much longer than they were first told causing him to miss several races coming up to the BC Classic. Yawn...
Currently the farm's highest priced stallion stands for $15,000 and the highest priced El Prado is Medaglia D'Oro at $40,000. I'd put Borrego in the $15,000 - $25,000 range with Champion Turf Horse Kitten's Joy. While Medaglia D'Oro performed at a very high level for three years, Borrego really is working off one good year as was Kitten's Joy. Borrego does have a pretty solid female family (albeit he's out of a daughter of Strike the Gold and the family hasn't produced any big sires but their a consistently good lot). Honestly, I quite liked Borrego as a racehorse, but I'm just not that excited about him as a sire. El Prado sons don't really do it for me.

well late last year I was wondering why he was still running, perhaps the market for El Prado sons made it worth it to keep running?
Then they said he was getting all ready for another race season. ANd I wondered how much value they can improve the guy by winning another Graded stakes. he was pretty good runner as it was.
Intentions sure seem to have gotten changed in a short time, or maybe it really is the ankle chip thing.

This farm was not recently picked. Borrego is going back to the farm where he grew up, to stand at stud for his breeders. The fact of where he's going has nothing to do with him being retired now. They had hoped to race him another year but it just didn't work out.
Will he breed this year? Or wait until next year? This seems like it would hurt him, either way. Mares are probably mostly booked now, right? So he wouldn't get much this year to breed to. And if he waits until next year, I am sure there will be "in the news" stallions (like this year's Derby winner) and Borrego will be forgotten.
$15,000 seems reasonable for him. Nice racehorse, really came into his own last year, but ummm...I would think he'd appeal to breed to race people.
