Catienus

Postby austique » Sat Apr 29, 2006 6:48 pm

I was wondering what some New Yorkers opinions were on him and his foals. On of my dad's new mares has a Catienus filly at side and while I don't like the matchup with that particular mare and the filly came into the farm looking like crap, the filly looks like she has a little spice to her.

Anybody like him, dislike him, think he should be gelded?

He's done pretty well so far from fairly limited opportunities.

I like him and was the under bidder on one of his at OBS. He wasn't bred to much in the way of page, but he is certain to see better.

Hi Patrick,

Were you at OBS? I was only there for day 1 and my owner decided to leave after getting 2 horses. May I ask what hip you bid on? Hows Penny and her foal?

Austique,
Catienus has done well but to be fair he had a reasonable start with decent size books and a good number of mares from the Ramseys. Despite being a son of Storm Cat he's not been a sales favorite, especially with yearlings and mares in foal.

His son, Dawn Of War, won the G1 Lane's End Futurity last year (at 2) and Nolan's Cat was 3rd in the Belmont and Super Derby (G2) last year so he can get a nice runner. He was supposed to move to KY at an increased fee of $10,000 but the lack of early booking kept him in NY at his former fee of $6,500. Good luck with the youngster.

Regards,

Pete

Hi Pete,

Penny and daughter are doing great.

I didn't go to the sale in person. I was selling hip 151 but he worked like crap (23.0) after working like a monster on the farm so I scratched him. I'll either put him back in the June sale (West Acres are hot) or I'll send him out to John Sadler and run him.

I liked the Catienus filly 156 who's update includes her only other sib being a full stakes winner. She had a knee that angled out but she walked through it and my vet who I really count on liked her. We knew she'd be cheap, but I got out at 15.

I remember the Fasig Tipton yearling sale in 2003 where a Catienus was included with the purchase of the lunch buffet. I'd swear there were 40 of them in the sale and I dont know if any sold for 5,000.

When you have money like the Ramseys, well actually I know YOU have money like the Ramsey's but I'll say if I had money like the Ramseys I'd be sending some super nice mares his way.

Congrats on your SA. I watched her preview on tape and she moves well.

Hi Patrick,

Well if you know that I have all that money then you know where I put it because I can't find it worth a darn!

Good luck with the West Acre. My feeling from the OBS sale is that it's a modest to good seller's market so with a nice work I hope you'll do well.

Season to Catienus, $5.00, with a ham sandwich, $12.00. He's really done ok but stallions often don't get their proper due.

As far as the filly, #156, don't look back because there are always others.

Just to clarify, I bought a Successful Appeal colt. The filly was hip #679 and if the colt ever moves like her I'll certify myself a genus (sic)!

Please give Penny and her daughter a kiss.

Regards,

Pete

My Catienus filly is worth at least a McGriddle and a large Coke

I kind of wish we'd bred something back to him cause I love me some McGriddles.

At least initially the bulk of the mares bred to Catienus were owned by Ken Ramsey, as were the majority of the offspring that made it to the races. Ramsey wanted his horse to top the freshman sire list by number of winners and he set out to race as many Catienus offspring as he could--dropping them in class until they reached a level where they could get that coveted win. Once that was accomplished you could pick them up in 5K claiming races because he didn't need them any more.

It's probably cheaper to buy a Catienus than it is to breed one and most of the ones that I've seen have breathing problems.

The sale yearling sale I saw them at was the Fasig-Tipton October yearling sale.

The Ramseys probably paid almost nothing for these.

Hi Folks,

I'm in for McGriddles!

LSB, we're not seeing the breathing problems up here in any significant numbers. I've seen perhaps 35-40 in the past 2 years. Maybe Ken was smokin' around the children? :)

I like him and I like the family. I wish he was over here. The carbon unit was a good (only) runner of his over her last year.He won four races including a listed event on his last run.
