I wonder if the timing of the sale was a factor. Could be some of the folks who were there in the spring -- the agents and the ones with a bit of money -- were already on their way to Keeneland.

PA Sale

Postby HiddenEchoFarm » Tue Sep 11, 2007 5:39 am

I think the crowd for this sale is mostly different than Keeneland, but you're right - I also thought there were some bloodstock agents checking out the May sale who wouldn't be at this one for that reason.

Pokeyman - that filly was bought back by her owner at $9100. She was extremely nice in person, too. She was a few stalls down from us so we got to see her out of her stall a lot.

Okay, this answers my question that PA does have a sale - just saw this post.

Now can anyone give me some info on the PA breeder's program? How did the overall sale look?

I was talking with my farrier last night and he said with the new Erie track opening that the purses there were unbelievable. I think he's wanting us/him to send some mares to PA to foal ;)

Thanks!

PA Sale

Postby KBEquine » Wed Sep 19, 2007 4:07 am

There IS a sale in PA, but it is not sponsored by the PA Horse Breeders Assn. Someone from Fasig Tipton once said that it takes 5 years for a sale to get off the ground. This sale series just started last year, so it's not yet established. This year's May sale was better than the 2006 sales & there was reason to look for even better results in September, but it really wasn't an improvement, from the seller's point of view. Results should appear in the TB Times [at least they did after the May sale].

Yearlings & horses of racing age did okay; some weanlings & broodmares & 3-in-1 packages didn't even bring a bid. The sale is sponsored by Rich Miller, who has Mountain Springs Arena & Campground off I-78 in eastern PA, about an hour west of NJ.

I don't know if the PA Horse Breeders Assn. will ever sponsor an official sale; a number of PA-breds also go through the FT Midlantic sale & others others through sales in Kentucky.

Despite the sale results, foaling in PA makes sense to me [then again, I'm here & that's what we do]. However, the jury's still out for me on this sale. But if you DO have broodmares/weanlings to sell, the entry deadline for the December Fasig-Tipton sale is generally after this sale, if you want to roll the dice & see if this sale has improved [but put a reserve on the horse]. We had one go through the ring & RNA & the cost was $300 + our time, so it is less of a loss than other sales. [Which is small consolation.]

The PA Horse Breeders' Assn. website is below:

Feel free to PM, if you've got specific questions.

Thanks - I'll check it out.

We would of course need to figure out the requirements for a PA bred (how long the mare needed to be in the State, if you needed to breed back to a PA stallion, etc...)

I know there are quite a few PA breds here at the Keeneland sale.
