I got curious (and was looking for any possible reason to postpone mowing my 8 acres of pasture until at least tomorrow) and went back to the 2001 Keeneland Sales (in '01 and '02 I included the now defunct July Sale as well as the September Sale).
Here are the Maktoum purchases from 2001 to 2005:
9.7 storm cat - tranquility lake (1 win)
6.3 storm cat - secret status (unraced to 3)
3.5 storm cat - serena's song (unraced to 3)
3.1 storm cat - serena's tune (unraced to 3)
3.0 storm cat - ajina (unraced to 3)
1.1 strom cat - onaga (1 win)
1.70 million storm cat - warm mood (unraced)
1.25 million storm cat - program pick (1 win)
.85 million storm cat - nannerl (won g.2 honorable miss last month at 4)
1.60 million storm cat - seeking regina (winner)
1.00 million storm cat - scoop the gold (unraced)
5.50 million storm cat- la affirmed (winner)
.90 million storm cat - colcon (unraced)
3.00 million storm cat - inca legacy (unraced)
2.40 million storm cat - memories of silver
(a winner for them, then won a minor Ellis stake AFTER they sold him)
That's 15 Storm Cat's purchased for a total of $44.9 million dollars.
The net result is one Grade 2 winner.
(This one stakes winner (a G.2 winner) was incidentally the least expensive of all 15 Storm Cat's they bought from 2001 to 2005)
NO OTHER STAKES WINNERS (or even stakes placers)
(except for one who won a minor stake after they sold him to someone else)
And EIGHT of them never even raced.
Geez, I would think they could have gotten more enjoyment for their money if they'd paid me a million dollars to kick Sheikh Mo in the nuts every time that they thought about buying a Storm Cat from 2001 to 2005.
(Think about all the times they could have been on America's Funniest Home Videos if you saw them start to place a bid on a Storm Cat and then suddenly I come out of nowhere and kick Sheikh Mo in the goodies - that's where the enjoyment part comes in - seeing themselves on America's Funniest Home Videos)
Edited to add a $3.3 million Storm Cat - Gone To Venus bought in 2001 at Saratoga who had one win but was not a stakes horse. So that's $48.2 million spent on 16 Storm Cat's from '01 to '05 and all they got was one G.2 wnr. They really went nuts last year buying 8 more Storm Cat's for $18.75 million and to date all are unraced (since they're only 2 there's still time for these to do something, although given their track record I wouldn't hold my breath). So from '01 to '06 they bought 24 Storm Cat's for $66.95 million and to date have only 1 SW (to be fair 8 of them are only 2yo's and could easily be something).

If someone would kick Storm Cat in the nuts more often, he wouldn't be able to destroy so many families and sire so many lemons.

What I find hilarious is the nay sayers are all over the fact that the first 2 sessions are down $57,000,000 from last year. Serious market correction, the buyers are holding on to their money, they are scared to buy now. blah blah blah.
2006
Ferguson $56,800,000
Coolmore 8,800,000
Total $65,600,000
2007
Ferguson $26,000,000
Coolmore 16,800,000
Total $42,800,000

I'm pretty sure Storm Cat would kick back though, so I wouldn't try it.

Well, I got yer market correction right here:
2006
Ferguson $86,400,000
Coolmore 11,100,000
Total $97,500,000
2007
Ferguson $30,100,000
Coolmore 21,900,000
Total $52,000,000
It don't take no genius to see where the market correction came from.
This is truly a brilliant post, Halo - good work!
The Dubai clan is now concentrating on ready made sires - the game has changed.
That goes along the lines of what I heard. They want to limit investment in the yearling sales and in Storm Cat in particular since he's the marquee sire of sires for Coolmore (and Coolmore owns quite a few shares AND has a hand in many of the SC yearlings you saw in the sale), and focus on the alternative stallions who are younger and raging up the totem pole, if you will, i.e. Distorted Humor and the established Indy.
In other words, they're separating themselves as much as possible from the options and choices Coolmore brings to the table for breeders.
Now, for the record, I heard this from someone in the Coolmore camp, so I believe it to be true, but it may just be them trying to grasp at straws.

Don't be so humble - you are not that great.
So I had to revise my figures. I must have added cumulative totals instead of session totals, my bad. So the figures aren't nearly as good as I thought they'd be, tho they still show that the bidding wars definitely added to the coffers. To me, the strength of the sale was that the median was exactly the same as last year, $300,000.

Can anyone tell me approximately when the mid-700's will sell?
I mistakenly thought I would be glued to my computer watching the live results but sadly DIAL-UP internet SUCKS
My favorite filly sold on day 1 for $160,000, she was a lovely RAHY filly. Next to sell is a Mr.Greely filly ....

Rather...my real wish in life is to take the Dallas Cowboy cheerleaders to Tahiti. LOL!
