Heritage Place?

I just received some advice to send my NM bred eligible weanling filly (Devon Lane/African Nights) to the Heritage Place sale in Oklahoma instead of trying to sell her in a sale in New Mexico.

Does anyone have experience with Heritage Place, and do you think the October or January sale would be a better bet. (She will be a yearling--just barely--at the January sale.)

Zialand the Heritage Place sale is known more for Quarter horses. They do run TB in the sale but I personally look for another sale to place my yearling. I am not down on Heritage but I think you could get a better price somewhere else. But on another note maybe since the slots are going hot and heavy at Remington there will be TB buyers in attendance.
Remington is posting some good purses and hopefully will just improve.

You might watch the results of the Fasig-Tipton yearling sale in Texas this Monday and Tuesday. It may be developing into more of a Southwestern Regional sale, with the heavy influx of Louisiana breds, with some from Oklahoma and New Mexico as well as the Texas breds. Check and see how many New Mexico buyers seem to show up? If it proves to be a good sale, enter next summer. It would mean about a six month wait, but might be worth it.

We decided to try her in a New Mexico sale in Anthony (for all practical purposes, El Paso) sale with a generous reserve. She's one of Devon Lane's first NM-breds to come up for sale since he returned to NM, so there may be a lot of local interest. We'll see.

If she doesn't sell, we may head for the Heritage Sale in January.

Why wouldn't you sell in the Ruidoso sale next summer? I'm curious as to why you were given advice re not to sell in NM. Some of the Devon Lane yearlings have sold quite well there in the past. Can you elaborate?

The advice came from a breeding farm I work with who fits weanlings and yearlings for the sales, and they felt Heritage Place would have more buyers and better prices. Just one farm's opinion. I've heard some say the Ruidoso sale did not go over well this year, but I understand a stallion we bred two mares to this year had two sell for $14.5K and $22K+ so we'd be satisfied if ours bring the equivalent in 2008.

I didn't put her in Ruidoso because of the timing (August is always a train wreck for me) but the October time frame for the Anthony (El Paso) sale is very doable. I'll put a generous reserve on her and if she doesn't sell, I'll point her toward an early 2007 sale. Selling her as a weanling or an early yearling is a decision we made based on market factors. I understand she's the only Devon Lane weanling going into the sale from his first crop of NM breds since he returned, and our understanding is there's a big demand right now and a lot of buyers looking for them. We're going for the Big Fish/Small Pond scenario in getting her out there ahead of the rest of Devon's foal crop. Just a strategy on our part, we'll see if it works out. She's a very nice looking filly with a lot of flash, and is pretty good size for a first foal.

If your filly has outstanding conformation and is fit she will do well at the Heritage. Good speed bred TB's do well at the heritage in a mixed sale. She won't get lost in the crowd because there won't be many like her. Your filly's sire has sired some good quarter horses that will make both Quarter and some TB buyers take notice. By and large I am afraid Devon Lane will be labeled as "cheap speed" by most of the TB guys while the Quarter folks will love him. If you can hold on to her till August Ruidoso will be as good.

Ruidoso is always an option, but I think she'll have a lot more competition in the sales ring next fall as the rest of Devon's first NM crop comes up for sale as yearlings then.

Laurie, where else are you going to find buyers more interested in NM-bred stock than Ruidoso? Believe me, Heritage doesn't get that many TB buyers, especially who want to spend money, and most don't race in New Mexico.

Henthorn, thanks for the feedback. The sales prep agent seemed to think Heritage would be a good place for her. Now that I've heard other opinions, I'm not so sure.

The Crossroads Sale could prove interesting in that it's near Sunland Park and close to a population base (El Paso). There seems to be a lot of interest, but it is the first year this sale has been held. We'll see how it goes. It will be a learning experience, I'm sure.

If she doesn't meet the reserve at Crossroads, I may put her on Starquine until the next sale. Anyone had positive or negative experiences going that route?

Laurie....nice breeding...however where did you get your facts on Claudius? I thought he only had the one go through the ring ...I didnt see the $22k horse...did I miss one? Or did I not read it properly? None the less I wish you luck.
I would send a mare to him in heart beat but the distance is a wee bit far for us in OHIO! lol

TBLADY, the word about the $22K Claudius yearling was from someone who attended the sale, so it's only world of mouth at this point and I haven't been able to verify it yet. (I certainly hope it's correct.) The $14.5K yearling sale I did verify with the consignor, so that information is valid.

I'll message you on the fitting info, though I have no problem with saying whose doing handling it, I don't want to post it without their permission.
