Barrett's January - Nice catalog.

Postby tbrace » Sun Dec 17, 2006 9:11 pm

The Barrett's Jan. catalog looks pretty good, with some nice mares (some carrying Kentucky sired foals) and some nice younger horses.

Anyone take a look at the catalog yet? Its online, I think.

How does it compare to other years? Any thoughts on the sale this year?

Hey tbrace,

I did take a quick breeze through the sale and it does at a quick glance look to be a stronger sale that normal for this time of year,I think maybe people are realizing that if you put questionable horses through these sales you are going to take a bath. There are some interesting racing prospects in the sale however I believe a lot of the race horses may have some "issues" so buyer beware.I see Bilo is in the sale and he was a really nice horse once upon a time but hasnt run since the summer of 05.Not sure what went wrong with him but if anyone knows give us the heads up!

I see Six Below is in the Havens consignment. I worked with a really nice daughter of his a couple of year's ago.

I think it's better than some of the Barretts January sale's I've seen.

Why 382? She has a sketchy race record at best? and her 1st dam is unraced?

There's nothing wrong with 382-yes there are better mares in the sale but she is a daughter of Phone Trick; Her dam being unraced obviously didn't affect Golden Antigua (SW of $209,000 at 4 & 5 in the U.S.,SP winner at 2 & 3 in Italy); Her dam is also a 1/2 sister to 2 graded stakes winners including a Grade 1 millionaire plus the 2nd dam being by Ribot doesn't hurt.I would be suspect on her race record but you can't knock being in foal to Slew City Slew - who has always been a blue collar sire that hits a big one occasionally and has sired a mere 36 stakes winners.I would not advise this mare to a client breeding to sell tho'.The race record will affect the selling price but breed to race this mare would be worth a shot at 10k or less.Sincerely-Jeff

I had 81 picked first, but moved her because of being a maiden mare. I really like her :D

As you can see I had 382 at the end...what I liked was this. She is in foal to Slew City Slew albeit late. Yes her race record is weak no doubt. But she is half to nice stakes filly and she is by Phone Trick who is showing he is a broodmare sire. I am guessing she would be a speed type horse which is a must in Ca.

To tell you the truth if you can buy this mare for under $7,000 the foal alone would be worth it and you can resell the mare in foal the following year.

I have no need for another mare and did this selection (not looking at the suppliment) for a friend of mine. Believe me this mare would be an improvement to the breeding stock she now has.

Not a mare I would personally buy. Her dam produced below average runners for the most part, including this mare...yet could easly improve through her daughters, six of which are sister to this mare. So these girls could improve the family through time.

For someone starting out she has lots of potential. Buddha and City Zip (I like him alot in fact thought about him for one of my mares) nice sires if they hit big you should have no trouble selling future foals. In foal to a marketable enough sire, although on a late cover may want to lay mare off next year to get her breeding date back. I would guess she goes for under $10,000.

After watching the first 200 Hips at theBarretts sale there is no rhyme or reason to this sale what so ever.Broke two year old going for 1000-3000$ for a decent page (Didnt look in the flesh so that may tell a tale) but the horse of racing age were nuts.A 5 year old friggin maiden (Broadway Player) went for MORE than he ran for in his last 3 starts....... he sold for 28K????Whats up with that?
