Advice on auctions please

Postby Blue feather » Sun Dec 02, 2007 4:24 am

I would like to sell a mare in foal at the Feb winter sale at Timonium. I have purchased before but never sold. What's the best way to go about it. Is it simple enough to do on my own or should I get someone with sales prep experience? If so , any suggestions?

I would definetly hire a consignor the first go round.. plenty in the mid-atlantic area.

If you're talking about the Fasig-Tipton Mid-Atlantic sale, the entries close December 5th so you need to do something pretty soon.

Generally speaking, unless you have a very inexpensive mare, you will do better to hire a consignor. With a low-value mare, sales and consignor fees can take up your whole sales price.

If the mare has some value go for the auction with an experienced consignor you feel confortable to deal with. Always keep in your mind that the sales company and the consignor will make good business even though it might not be a good business for you. So if you think your product is not commercial, I would sell it privately and avoid all the sales nomination fees, consignor fees and commission as well as on-sales-grounds care wich is usually quite expensive.
