WHOA! From today's Keeneland Sale results:
CH .M. Irish Cherry Southern Equine Stables $ 2,700,000 Hill 'n' Dale Sales Agency, Agent
There wasn't another bid breaking the 7 figure barrier today and I'm just kind of shocked...I mean I LKED Irish Open, bred my mare to him when he stood here in Texas....think he's got the potential to be a better BM sire than he was a racehorse sire...>BUT is this mare really worth this bid or did someone lose their mind?!? Obviously more than one someone as this had to be fairly contested bidding to spiral to these atmospheric levels.
I do get it that she's already produced two MSW by Awesome Again and is in foal to his Sprinter son GHOSTZAPPER....one of those SW offspring being SPUN SUGAR a MGSW by Awesome Again. So somebody believes to the tune of $2.7MM that lightening will strike THRICE in this mare's case?

halo - you're right of course - my gray matter took Ghostzapper's reknown for speed and translated that - incorrectly - to "sprinter" as I typed.

Lose their mind, who knows? Looking for a great big tax write off, who knows?...
I do know this, if anyone wants to lose their mind like that again, our colt sells around 12:00 on Thursday...Yea, right, if only we and everyone else selling this week, could get SO lucky that someone would lose their mind like that again.
You never know what people are willing to pay dearly for if they want it...that is if they have the money for it. I have learned one thing about the sales, they are not overly rational or logical when it comes to what brings the big $$$ and what doesn't. Disagree?

With the way the dollar is these days, that translates to about eight and a half bucks.

Why is Southern Equine paying that much for this mare. Is Sarge losing his mind? Wonder if they sell the baby or race him.

Why is it so shocking that a mare that has produced 2 G1 winners & is carring a 3/4 sib to those G1 winners being in foal to one of the best & most brilliant racehorses we have seen in the past few years brings a very large sum at auction? Not to mention that Spun Sugar brought 4.5 mil last Nov & Daaher is being pointed towards the richest race in the world in the Dubai World Cup & to speak of Ghostzapper like he was just a sprinter is plain silly. Her being by Irish Open means nothing at this point and dont think that Nick Hines had any input in the purchase of this mare as he is just Southern Equines racing manager. Eric Guillot is the main horse person behind that operation which is loaded and willing to spend on not only young & racing horses but also high class broodmares.

I agree with Tom Fool
Whether they keep or race the '08 it will be one valuable foal. Eric has a good eye for horses. I am sure she looked the part.

Aren't the Sarge and Guillot rookies in the breeding game? Is there a possibility the price was bid up?

Guillot is a bafoon. Moreno has the money behind the operation. Hines is at Keeneland right now

The owner of Southern Equine Stables (Mike Moreno) has plenty of money to burn. He owns a bunch of companies here in Louisiana, one of which my mom works for. He does what it takes to get to the top no matter what the cost.

Well unless Nick Hines started sporting a sun visor yesterday he wasent the guy signing the ticket on this mare. As I stated Eric is the main horse guy behind Southen Equine & yes Mike is the money. I believe Show Me The Stage was one of the first horses they were in on together. Eric claimed Slew The Surgeon for 32k then won a G3 with him in Cal then he retired there & bred like 3 mares his first year. One of the resulting foals was Show Me The Stage who Eric bought & brought back to La. They also have a big intrest in the La stallion Gold Tribute but its seems now they are moving well up beyond horses like him. These guys are major players in the sales & racing game & with the money Mike is willing to spend its just a matter of time before they start being household names in racing.

As a stallion owner in the state of Louisiana, I hope these guys, Mike & Eric, will bring in some real high class mares that will produce some high class LA accredited babies. This will in turn bring in deep pockets to the sales from all across the country. When deep pockets come to see SES high class babies at the sale then they might stop by and take a look at my babies. In LA we need mares with pedigrees that people outside of the state recognize. There are so many backyard breeders no one has ever heard of most of the bloodlines. How do they expect someone to come from outside the state to spend decent money if they haven't heard of any horse in the first 3 generations. SES, I believe, will help the racing industry in LA tremendously by breeding, selling, and racing within the state.
Good Luck Guys,
Larrygene
P.S.- Did Nick Hines quit training??

Yes Hines quit about 2 months ago. Hes the manager for Southern Equine.
What horse are you standing in Louisiana?
