Real quickly. I know we have discussed pinhooking, the good the bad and the ugly. We've discussed the potential damage done by both the 2YO and yearling market in terms of preparation. Here is a statistic that surprised me. I knew the compiled data could show good results, tell me what you think: From this weeks Throughbred Times magazine (February 2, 2008):

"Table 1 summarizes data from the ten most important sales of two-year-olds in training - alphabetically... for horses sold at those ten sales from 1997 through 2006. Remarkably enough, the 23,333 horses sold at those ten sales over that ten-year window have earned back 95.2% of their $1.45-billion total purchase price. That is a far higher percentage than graduates of yearling sales manage."



This does not take into account the horses that RNA or did not make it to the sale, or the residual values of the horses after racing.

Past studies have shown similar results.

The two-year-old sales have their issues, but in most cases these horses are runners of some degree.

so i have a better chance of getting a horse worth a damn in a 2YO sale than a yearling sale?

2YO's that are REALLY worth a damn, usually don't go to a sale.

I wonder if anyone has done a study on ROI from weanling to 2 year old sales. That would be interesting, because if you don't put them in the yearling sale, or even prep them, you don't run the risk of them being at that awkward stage.

I think most pinhookers of weanlings are selling at the yearling stage. Unless theres a problem, then they might hold till the 2YO sale. 6 month turn-around.

i've always wondered about this.. it's like going to the veggie garden and picking over what the gardner has left behind afte rhe has taken all the good stuff. everyonce in a whle one will slip or develop late but for the most part... unless you are a true pin hooker to the sense of the world... look at war pass. i think they were looking for reasons nto to sell him and they ended up keeping him.

last time I checked only $ 15 989 740 to go....

And thats the beauty of the game. It's not only about how much money you spend. If it was, the Sheik, the Coolmore guys, would win every race. It presents opportunity at the mid-level at every sale. I'll post it later, but the majority of the money won is not from the top priced horses. Actually, the "pissing-level" horses rarely make an impact.
