OBS SELECTED AUGUST YEARLING SALE

Postby dray33 » Fri Aug 08, 2008 5:47 am

Anyone looked at the photos online ( http://www.obssales.com/augpreview/ )?

Two things I noticed: 1) either the photographer is good, or those SPANISH STEPS look very nice, and 2) some rather light-boned horses out there.

Any impressions?

Hi Dray....

I think the Peace Rules look very well balanced, but that may also be my bias of having liked him on the track.

I know the Spanish Steps were well recieved at the sales last year, but I think ya got get a hell of a female page to compensate for him being unraced....from a risk/reward standpoint.

I'll be at the SPA next week. Hope your keeping everyone in line up there! Maybe we'll catch you at the Oklahoma track again this year.......counting the days!
And DOWN the stretch they come!

Haha all the Spanish Steps look like virtually the same horse!!
Some of the fillies are downright scary though, I think the tankiest looking horses were actually fillies. But I don't know enough about the particular sire lines to know how they might stamp their offspring. I also thought many appeared to be over at the knee. Which may be a yearling thing or bad photo, who knows. I also wasn't drawn to many of them because once again they were tank bodies on spindle legs. jmo

I chose to look at pictures for picks rather than catalog pages. I like particular structural assets, so I figure if I like it for what it is the catalog page can't really hurt it too much for me.

My far too long list begins: (Mind you I am a color kook!! ) But even color without structure doesn't sell me.

16,17,37**39**,43,47**,50***,51**,60**,73***,90,94**,98,127***,138,149,158,172,184**,193***,197***,203**,205,223**,226**

No *'s - appealing
**'s - me likey
***'s - me really likey lmao!!

Matt: I am going back up today, so I will be there for the weekend, and back downstate on Monday (only a few days) then back UP again for a week... so call me when you get there and we'll hang out.

I see a lot of spindly legs in these pics spex. I gotta go through them once more, I'll pic my top 10  Let's have a contest and see which 10 we pick earns more money after they finish the 4 year old year! I'll bet you a beer. Or two. :P

I'd be wondering if some of those Spanish Steps weren't born in winter of "06.

I agree the Spanish Steps look great, especially 210, but that photographer has the best shots. I agree on light bones too--I also noticed that there are many freakishly small heads (137!), and I'm not liking the Alkes.

Hey Spex,

Had to look myself and pick my own numbers...
you and I agree on 16, 47, 60, 98, 127, 172, and 193.
How can you not like 210!!! What a "wow" shot!

I think a bone density scan is an important thing to get before spending a lot on any Thoroughbred.

You're on Dray!! Though why do I have the distinct feeling I'll be buying the beer ??!??

And, Toccet, #210 is a miniature replica of Spanish Steps. Heck I even felt bad including any SS's offspring in my list b/c they all look like CLONES!! Which I guess is not bad from a stallion owner's point of view! Though there is a colt there by him that is chromed really nicely...but take the white away and he looks like all the others!!

My fave is the Hennessy #193..... even though I am torn b/c the sensible side of me thinks he is too much of a monster for his age.

Sentimental fave is #50 b/c she looks darn near identical to my girl when she was a yearling. And mine was hooooommmmmeeeelllllly hahaha!! Yearlings are so hard for me to judge.

I like to see other people's picks, especially as it pertains to pedigree, as I am still learning the ropes on that side too.

I also wish that with all the $$$$$ that these sales rake in they should include the conformation shots of the sire and dam as well. For me that would give a better estimate of what direction all those gangly legs are heading! :D

I would automatically eliminate the offspring of stallions whose get have low starts per runner or who fractured their legs(unless they had a lot of starts). Hennessy has only 11 starts per runner. Hennessy was swaybacked when he died at 14 and a swayback is a symptom of fragile bone. Unsoundness is something that needs to be bred out. There is too much of it already. The worst unsoundness is fragile bone because it costs the lives of thousands of horses.

I'd be curious to see what #45 looks like as I really like that family.

It's probably too late but could you please post a picture of hip #45 serenarider? Also, did he sell, if so, for how much?

Mary
I did not see the post to get a pic of him for you. Sorry. He did sell for 27k. With the storm I had to leave to get my farm ready. There was not that many people there when I was there.
