what exactly?
I used to think it meant the person or entity who planned the mating.
Then from this forum it seemed to mean just the person/entity who owned the mare.

Is there an EXACT definition that the jockey club requires? If so what is it?

The breeder is the owner of the mare at the time she foals.

so if a farm is listed as the breeder, it means the mare is from their broodmare herd?

I can't be much clearer than Madelyn was. If the farm is listed as the breeder, then the farm owned the mare when the foal was born.

Depending on the jurisdiction where the foal was born and the associated breeders bonus structure, the farm may not have strictly owned the horse at the time of foaling. I know of several breedings where the stallion farm gets named as the foals breeder in lieu of a stud fee. If the foal runs the stallion farm collects the breeders bonus. I've heard of other contractual reasons where someone else gets named as the breeder so that the breeders bonus gets paid out differently from how the horse is sold or purse monies earned.

What Madelyn said is the official definition and should be assumed true until you have information to the contrary. Madelyn was kind enough to give you a clear definition, I figured I'd through some mud in the water to cloud things a bit.

Thank you Dave; that's what I meant. There are always "unless", "in Lieu of", etc. situations that muddy the water, and that's what I was looking for.
