She is not in foal now so the first chance of having a yearling to sell is 2015 (breed in 2013, foal in 2014, sell yearling in 2015).

What if she has a bad yearling? Misses a year? Aborts? Has a good yearling with bad radiographs? Has an average yearling with good radiographs?

One could say owning Havre de Grace is like owning a Picasso, however a Picasso does not die as this mare eventually will, and a Picasso will continue to appreciate. This mare is unlikely to ever be valued at $5mm again, much less $10mm.

Same individual purchased Plum Pretty today for $4.2mm - a lot of money to be sure but that number actually gives the mare the chance to ultimately be profitable. One good foal from either mare will likely be $1mm plus, which is a significant return for Plum Pretty but still a long way from break-even for Havre de Grace.

Mares like Plum Pretty and Havre de Grace, for a small breeder like me, are the stuff that dreams are made of. Certainly I would not, could not, ever step up for a mare like that but I can dream about producing one.. and these big fireworks sales, like any spectator sport, are kind of fun to watch.

and some people just like to own fine art.

A friend sent me a link to see the selling video. BTW what a beautiful scene, quite different than in Tattersalls.

To be honest It is a very scary thing to own such a fortune. She is just a horse, anything can happen to her.

But I agree with Madelyn, as a breeder you just dream of such a horse.

I hope she will make the price worth!

For the buyers it is often a prestige issue...Look how rich and powerful I am,I outbid these others...And for some 10 millions is not much and for the average person it is an investment but for others a statement....Personnaly,I often ponder what a late friend once said "a racehorse is worth X amount a pound until proven otherwise" ...

Now for something even dumber.

The brain surgeon that bought this mare is breeding her to Tapit????
