One of my pals who is a race trainer used Gastro Guard for several years, and then switched to the lower priced version. It was still $23 per day per horse, which adds up when you have four in your barn on the stuff. Lately, we have been getting compounded Omeprazole for about $500 a bottle, that contains 60 doses, and just over $8 per horse per day, and it works just as well. Note that his horses are on a drastic standard worming program - they are treated every two months with a double dose of fenbendazole for five days (just like a power pack) and in the intervening month with moxidectin/praziquantel. Oftentimes, when he gets a new horse and just does the big bang worming, some vitamin shots, and a bit of farrier work to relieve the long toes/no heel, the change is overwhelming and he has that horse back out and winning in four weeks.

An alternative treatment for ulcers is to combine antibiotics (I have used SMZ's in the past) and fenbendazole (Safeguard or Panacur) used as a power pack. It might at least get you 90 percent there. Recently, I was researching wormers and parasites and I think that it is possible that encysted small strongyles might be an underlying problem and perhaps a contributing factor to post-gastric ulcers. Certainly, the symptoms are a bit similar.

I originally found one on Heartland Veterinary Supply's website, and we order it through a vet from Butler Pharmaceutical.

No web site for Abba Vet Supply; however, you can googlr Kevin L. Brophy, DVM..

The best way to het a price list is call 717-838-8041 and ask them to fax you a price list..

By the way, they sell Omeprazole, Omeprazole w/Bismuth, Omerprazole Suspension, and Omeprazole Suspension Buffered plus Gastrogard, gastrix, and Ulcer Gard.

They are very reasonable and easy to deal with.

I use Omeprazole, works pretty good. Been on it for about a month and I'm training fine. =)

Got tons of the damn stuff actually. No alcohol consumption when taking it. So tell your ponies to lay off the bottle.

ranitidine/cimetidine is effective in suppressing gastric acid secretion in foals. recently regular dosing with proton pump blocking drug omeprazole appearedsignificantly reduce risk & severity of gastric ulcers & allowed to heal inadult horses.
