It's a diuretic used to expell large amounts of fluid retained in the body. In humans, cancer patients often receive it if they suffer from fluid retention after chemo. I've never heard of it used on horses.

I belive your thinking of lasix, pred is used in people with asthma, lupus, various skin conditions....in dogs for flea allergie dermatis, mast cell tumors, lots of stuff. Over the short term there are alot of side effects that get worse if the Tx is prolonged and/or the dose is high. Off the top of my head I can only rember a few ie cushing's, weight gain/or loss, increased appitite, behavioral changes, liver dammage, you need to get your mitts on a drug flyer or a VPB. let me look it up, if you give me spacifics I can let you know.

Pred in horses seems to be "off lable", we use lots of drugs this way, so I couldn't get good info spacificaly regarding side effects in horses. I'll assume the effects are the same and say cushing's seems to be the biggest concern. Thus the animals are monitored closely by a vet during Tx, ie blood work before during and after even to be sure endogenous steroid production stays normal
