Splitting of the Udder

Postby 20dourmdd » Mon Mar 26, 2007 7:51 pm

I have a mare ready to foal any day now...but her udder has split just above the teats. Vet says he has never seen anything like this...clear fluid drips out of it...has no smell, no mastides, no temperature, but is very painful. Anyone ever see this happen to a mare? I am concerned about the new foal when it arrives will not be allowed to nurse. Any suggestions quick...mare will foal within next two or three days.

Well, my first instinct would be to put some Neosporin-type stuff on it and see if it can heal before she foals. Then be prepared to have some milk replacer ready. That won't help for the colostrum though. Oh my, I feel for you.

I have a mare whose bags look so big they COULD split!! Please keep us posted on how your girl fares.

If it split because her udder is full to bursting, it's possible that you might try to milk her out a little bit by hand at first and see if that relieves any of the pressure/pain on the split area. That might make her tolerate nursing more easily - but on the other hand, a split udder is an open invitation for mastitis. I'd talk to the vet again first before trying anything. At the very least, she should probably be on antibiotics.

I feel for her! (And you!)

Split Udder

Postby 20dourmdd » Sun Apr 15, 2007 4:15 pm

Mare foaled a filly...she was milked after being sedated...Had to give foal plasma because not enough immunity...the udder is healing, but we are watching closely the amount of milk she is producing...may need to add milk replacer.

Our other mare foaled the same day...her foal coliced (sp) because she produces too much milk...fortunate to save its life.

I might lose my a?? with the vet bills this month and the IRS due. I am hoping the next mare that foals will have everything go right.
