Pedigree Query

I have a question our month old colt navel area sticks out of his stomach area ...about an inch...it is hard no infection in sight...he has a big outie....looks like where his willy wonker should be but that is farther back....is this normal???our fillies of course never have done this!! His was treated at birth with betadine... and then followed up ....it looks like a hairy bump!!! bugs me....should I be doing something???

Sounds like a hernia - sometimes they heal themselves and sometimes the vet has to fix it. Check with your vet ....

It's a little umbilical hernia, much more common in colts. Don't worry about it till he is a long yearling - if it hasn't disappeared, it's an easy fix.

whewwww..where would I be without you guys??? yes we had another friend that foals appys come and look at it for sure....he laughed and told me that they way I described it was big.....he too agreed it is a smalllllll hernia, said as you did to wait. Where is the smilley that has sweat drippin from it ???thats the one I need here I am such a frantic mom!!!!

i have a yearling filly with a hernia, just called cornell. they told me surgery is between $1,000.00 & $1,200.00.... they also told me if i would have had it done early itr would only be around $400.00 id look into it in your area before you wait! (as i did)

Can you push the hernia back up? I love Cornell (was there yesterday in fact) but sometimes you can avoid surgery by pushing the hernia back up thru the opening a few times a day and eventually the hole closes and the hernia is gone...this works late weanlings and early yearlings mostly.

A hernia shouldn't be hard. Rather it should be soft and pliable. If it is "hard" it could be the result of an absess. As Gerry suggested, are you able to push the tissue back in? If not and it feels thickened it is very possible there is an infection present. Good luck

What you're feeling is most likely fat (omentum) from the abdominal cavity protruding throught the ring (hernia). Rarely does a hernia heal without surgery. Have your farm vet check it out now. Generally it is easier to fix when it is small. Basically they make a skin incision , freshen the edges of the ring(hernia) and then suture. As always, all the normal risks associated with any surgery are inherent. Do it sooner not later.

i have an appointment to get the surgery done, has anyone tried a hernia belt?
