Pedigree Query

2yr old colt with no contact of any outside horses (actually no new horses have come on property in about 3 weeks), appetite is good, attitude is good, but he has a large hard lump where I am guessing his Rostral Maxillary Sinus is and also has lumps under his jaw..some are hard and some are squishy. No other symptoms...my first guess was strangles but I cant figure out where he would get it from and then I started thinking sinus infection or ???

I am waiting for the vet to call me and will be going out shortly to check his temp...but he doesnt act sick at all.

Ideas?

Did he get the strangles vaccine or nasal spray for strangles? I believe The Horse had an article several years ago that stated sometimes the vaccine caused all kinds of problems with horses, but am not sure if those are some of the symptoms that they listed. I BELIEVE (and I'm going on memory here) that it was suggested not to give the vaccine unless you knew your horse was transporting somewhere that they would be exposed to them. Might want to ask your vet - just a thought.

Could it be he ate something that he had an allergic reaction to? Perhaps something in the field/paddock?

I would monitor your horses temp twice a day as well as appetite and demeanor. Strangles causes acute symptoms - high fever, lethargy, and inappettance. What you are seeing could be the result of injury. Good luck

One almost sure sign of guttural pouch infection is that when the horse puts his head down to the ground, mucous will run out of his nostrils. Strangles doesn't do this.

Well good news..today he has no temp, still eating great, no snots and running circles like the kid he is. Maybe it is teeth, heard that from a few people.

did you check his teeth.. sometimes they do get infections in their mouths that can show up in odd places around the jaw.
