I just has a thought as I was reading the blistering topic-Need some input
or Ideas......

Last summer my jumper was turned out at night-he hates bugs and heat-Jumped his paddock fence (about midnight) and attempted to jump the Jeep Grand Cherokee that was driving down the road...Needless to say, he had not had any prior experience jumping moving objects and ended up getting rolled over the car....
Car was totaled, and the horse (all 1600lbs of him) seemed pretty okay-major road rash and a few scratches here and there-the most severe injury was a deep lac on his shoulder-through the muscle to the bone-
We did'nt suture given the locations-right over his shoulder-did'nt affect the actual joint-

The wound healed great, with about a 2 inch scar-and for about 4 months after the accident he did'nt take a lame step-Since however he has gotten increasingly more stiff on that shoulder-He responded okay to some massage therapy-but nothing lasting...about 2 days per session.....and not 100%-
For quite a while, he would start stiff and work out of it and be happy ect..
This quite working about 3 months ago-he is no longer working out of it, and is now lame in his paddock-tried stall rest-he got worse-Stuck him in the pasture for a month no change-

There is a decent ridge over the area-raised about 1/4 inch-I assume it's scare tissue....

Treatment ideas?

is it possible he had some sort of fracture in the incident that didn't dislocate and (4months) later re-fractured completely? What are the vet's guess? Do you have a way to know the ridge is scar tissue and not calcification?

Wow, I've seen my horses attempt some silly things, but thank God, so far non have tried to jump a moving vehicle.

He might have had some sort of stress fracture, or saucer fracture. Without extensive and expensive x-rays there is no way to know for sure. The problem, which would show up progressively somewhat in the way you describe, would be the calcifications that would eventually form over the bone, providing a ridge. I have a gelding who has that on the side of his pastern bone, in one of the only possible locations where it cannot affect soundness. He is at the track and just fine.

Before I did anything I would have x-rays and ultrasound done to make sure there isn't a fracture that is not healing well, or bone chips floating around or a foreign object in there that is working it's way around. Sometimes even a very small chip of something, say paint or metal from the Jeep (by the way....YIKES!!!) can cause more problems later on. I would assume you did this after the accident, but you should really redo them now that he is showing new lameness.

Also, make sure that it really is his shoulder that is the problem. A problem with the foot will look suspiciously like stiffness in the shoulder.

Agree with everything stated-
all x-rays have been clean to date...

No obvious problems in his foot-

The ridge, that I assume is scar tissue-is very moveable upon palpatatiation....

New vet is looking at him in two weeks....maybe she'll find something

If it is movable scar tissue, then is could be adhesions. There is a laser procedure (surgery) that can help with that.

By the way, how did the Jeep driver come out of it all?

not a scratch on him.....and he has'nt been speeding lately either
