Yearling off-balance in hind end

Filly developed neurological symptoms in October - didn't know where her hind legs were and 'walked drunk.' Vet didn't diagnose her as a wobbler at that time and said to supplement her with vitamin e and selenium.

(Filly has ALWAYS dog-sat before getting up from lying down, beginning at 3 weeks old and up to now, with the right hind being the weak leg.)

Filly has come back to just about normal. She's a bit crooked in the right hind and we're doing some corrective trims to straighten that. She no longer shows neurological issues at the walk.

At the canter, she's off-balance in the rear. The more she runs, the better she goes. When she slows or stops, sometimes she knuckles over in back.

Any thoughts on this? Does she sound like a wobbler? She passes the tail test and can walk in a tight circle fine.

You could try EPM meds for the heck of it. But it could be wobblers.

In my experience, wobblers continue to deteriorate. She could have had a neurological injury that weakened her immune defenses and allowed EPM to kick in. I would also suggest trying Marquise or some other EPM med and see what happens.

Thank you both. SM, that's encouraging that you've seen deterioration. My filly has certainly not done that!

What are alternate EPM medications? Marquis is only available by prescription and I'm not able to get one at this time.

There are generics for Marquis and Navigator made by compounding pharmacies. I order one through a vet. I think it might still be $75-95 a bottle. But it can make an INCREDIBLE difference.
