Pedigree Query

I went out to see my mare today and a nasty/bleeding growth actually popped through the bandage on her injured knee. I called the farm owner and he said it was proud flesh and that they would probably need to cut it off. I've heard of proud flesh, but never had to deal with it. What causes proud flesh and what are the best treatments? Is this anything to be overly-concerned about?

Quick update... We had the vet come out yesterday and it turns out that it wasn't proud flesh. It looks like the torn skin on her kee under the bandage wasn't healing together properly (probably due in part to her banging on it... she didn't like the bandage or stall she was in) and she also busted the wound open (through the bandage) resulting in a very unsightly open wound and large bump (where the skin has seemed to fold under). The vet just said to keep it unbandaged, clean, and treat it with SSD ointment (silver sulfadiazine). The good thing is that she's not lame and doesn't seem to be in much pain, but don't know if her leg will ever look the same.

Why didn't he vet stitch up the knee?

Well, the knee was stitched up after the initial injury. Now, I think the wound has already begun to heal improperly (the vet said the loose/cut skin folded under itself and didn't close, probably due to her banging on it) and is now too open/healed to re-stitch. I just got a call from my wife who checked on her and she said it it looking much better today... it looks like the SSD ointment is working.
