A friend of mine lost a mare last year and recommended I start vaccinating my mares for botuilism.. Has anyone had any experience with this vaccine and is it OK to vaccinate a mare that will foal within 30 days?

Does young stock need this vaccine or is the problem mostly with mares//

The vaccine I use is Pnemobort (sp) and is given in the 5th, 7th and 9th month of pregnancy. I would check with the vet before giving it so late.

My mare got the "botox injection" (not for cosmetic reasons ) on 3/13 (She's due 4/29), The doc said if she needed boosters which they apparently do if it is the first time they receive the vaccine ( 2 boosters at 2 week intervals) they would be ok up to about 2 weeks out - so 30 days may be a little too close if this is the first time.
The doc also said that the occurences are rare in central PA - but the mare is going to foal in SE PA and the occurances are more prevalent there.

Cathyleabo, that is just for Rhino (EHV). Not botulism.

Vaccinating for botulism and other environmental foal killers is usually recommended if the property has a history of harboring that bacteria.

what happens if i give her only one shot before tyhe foal ?

So it is! Sorry for passing bad info, thanks for the heads up.

I've vaccinated my mares with Bot vaccine 4 to 6 weeks from foaling on my Vets recommendations. So far, no problems.
