So my mare is being checked on Saturday (15 days past O) to see if she is in foal. Anyone know where I can buy Regumate at the best price?

Saturday will be 15 days past ovulation and the vet wants to put her on Regumate if she is IF.
How do I know that she really needs it?
I will put her on Regumate, I don't want to take chances. Just wondering if she really needs it and how would I know?

Regumate is one of those drugs that can be overused from a wallet's perspective. It ain't cheap and it is a PITA to give. Check her progesterone level prior to deciding to put her on it. There is also an injectable form of progesterone that you can give which is less expensive and easier. Ask your vet.

If your vet will write a prescription, it's usually cheaper through Valley Vet, etc.

I did not know about the shot. Can I still get her blood drawn or did I wait too long for a bloodtest?

Call Mountain Vet if you do need Regumate: 970.484.2200. They have awesome prices on everything else...I imagine their price for that beats just about everyone, too.

Sock Monkey, what injection are you referring to??

I prefer the slow release progesterone injection, which I can give once a week. It is MUCH cheaper, and just simpler to use. I used it last year and it worked just fine.

Where do I get the injection? My vet clinic is clueless and LSU is not much help. Can I get it online w/ a RX? What is the name of it?

I got it through a friend (vet) who ordered it from a compounding pharmacy. The nickname, I believe, is P4.

Madelyn, could you get the specifics, name and where to get it? That way we can find out what it is actually is used for. Inquiring minds want to know!!

A vet has to order it. It is replacement progesterone, just like Regumate, except it is injectible rather than oral. As I said, a friend (VET) ordered it for me and I don't have any information beyond that. It is a very COMMON product, slow release progesterone.

Perhaps one of our vet members could chime in on this.

P4 is Progesterone. I hope one of our vet members can give us some insight into what is Madelyn's friends product. We need all the help cutting costs as we can get since corn has gone to $6 a bushel. Feed costs are going to go thru the roof it appears.

I went to buy feed (safechoice) yesterday and it is $13.50 for 50 lbs. WOW, I can remember a few years ago it was only like $10.99 and I was complaining.
I think it would be cheaper to feed free choice grass hay and alfalfa.

I used to pay $7.99 a bag for Safechoice YEARS ago..

I used the long acting progesterone last year and it worked just fine. Dr. Roger gets it from Hagyard Pharmacy in Lexington I believe.

Why is it that when we send mares to KY to be bred, they test their progesterone level, find out it is ok- then put them on Regumate AND long acting progesterone- up until they foal??? Seems like overkill to me...
