Pedigree Query

My 10-mo. old filly has a cut on her face, right dead center on the bridge of her nose, probably an inch above where her halter strap goes across. I am having a devil of a time keeping any kind of dressing on it because of where it's located. Right now, I'm using those giant Band-Aids for people that have neosporin already in it, with duct tape over it to try and keep it stuck on. It isn't working well at all! Does anyone have any experience with a cut in this location and/or suggestions for dressing?

I've not tried it on anything other than my own fingertips but Skin Shield liquid bandage with pain reliever does form a barrier and might help keeping flies off. Don't have a clue as to how it will affect hair regrowth?

Anything I can't bandage gets sprayed with Blue Cote. I had a horse get loose from the pony and run off the track and smack into the side of a brick barn. He had banged up knees but I could bandage those. He had a gaping wound on his elbow though that was horrifying. When he walked you could see the bone. I sprayed it a couple times per day and it healed up completely in a month. The worst part was the drainage. Even though I coated the back of his forearm with vaseline the goop still stuck to him and had to be scrubbed off. It was not pretty but you would never know it now.

Laurie, I googled Blue Cote, and got zip.....are you sure that's the correct spelling? I put some Wonder Dust on it last night and this morning, at least that will put some antiseptic in and keep any proud flesh from forming. I've seen a horse with a large (old) proud flesh lump on his face, and it aint pretty! I don't want my sweet little baby getting one.

It also comes in a dab on version which is probably better for a face wound.

I've had better success with a product called Granulex than Wonder Dust. I get it thru my vet. To keep flies out, there are several fly ointments made especially for wounds. Good luck.

I usually goop on Corona to keep the flies off. It sticks like glue.

Also good for medicating and keeping flies off is SWAT. You can put Blue-Kote on the wound and then dab SWAT over and around it.

I have some pink Swat.....forgot all about that. I also have some Scarlex, which is similar to Laurie's Wound Kote and even made by the same brand. I just didn't want to spray in her face, she might panic! I can spray onto a piece of gauze, though, and daub it on. Thanks for the input, guys!

Corona is awesome for growing hair back, too. It's gooey but it works.

How did the healing go. Sorry been off for ages. Just other commitments.

Oh, thanks for asking. It's healed nicely, hair regrown. You'd never know it'd been there. And she's off to a new home as well!
