Biomarkers have been discovered that are released from bone when there is microdamage. A serum biomarker test is being developed that can be used to help identify horses at risk for fractures. Biomarkers tests are being used in people. Horses with positive biomarker tests can then be checked out with bone scans,x rays,or MRI. Microfractures(tiny stress fractures that do not show up on x-rays) and bone remodeling can lead to serious life threatening fractures. If the horse is overtrained before these fractures heal and the bone is remodeled then the result can be fatal. This is part of what I read in an article on www.thehorse.com web site. They have many many articles that you can access free if you register(free). You can subscribe to the magazine also if you like having things in print. The subscription rate is reasonable. The article title is "Understanding and Preventing Catastrophic Injuries" no. 11998

Thanks for the heads up and I hope the test is available soon. What a help it would be when you know something is bothering the horse and none of the experts can figure out what it is.
