Any input is highly appreciated

Another name is "Capped elbow", it's when the horse lies down the shoe causes pressure on the elbow
just got him one of those "doughnuts" Hope it helps

Get a "doughnut" and paint the thing with DMSO. They are ugly, but really have no ill effect

HAHAHA maybe we have matching scars on or bums one day. Been bitten on me bottom more than once... hurts like the dickens.
DMSO can sting some and will cause scurf or even blistering so be careful using it too much or too long.

Valjoe, a shoe boil can be relived by a good trim (the hoof rubs against the elbow when they lay down and tuck their feet in) and using the shoe boil boot --the "doughnut"-- around their pastern, but sometimes they get anaerobic gas inside and can be extremely dangerous and painful. The vet is needed to open it up, flush it, and stitch it back up.
I've seen a shoe boil come back when people use the doughnut, but the one time I had the elbow operated on, it never came back again.
