Pedigree Query

I picked up my girl from the track today. ( emergency come get your horse call...) She has a very hangy lip. I will have the vet out ASAP but what would cause this sort of thing? Did she have a stroke? Her movement is fine and she is alert. Gutteral pouch infection? I swear the horses are deliberately staying awake at night trying to come up with new ways to injure themselves...

I would look into whether or not it could be nerve damage.

We had a gelding at the college I went to that had a paralyzed lip, due to nerve damage. Some get better, while others may not.

The Vet figures it is nerve damage. Looks like she smoked herself in the side of the face. She would have hit the buckle on her halter. That is enough force to do it. My big worry now is how the heck is she supposed to eat? My vet figures she will have no problems but I just dont know how she can pick up grain.

She could have just asked to retire, didnt have to go and scare me like that.....

Well, that is better news than a stroke. I had one pull back on a tie in the trailer and the halter gave her nerve damage on the bridge of her nose so her nostrils were paralyzed for a while. She recovered, but I can't remember the time frame. Good luck.

If I can find someone with a camera I will get pictures ( yes I know I am the only person in the free world without a digital camera.) This might be the excuse I need to get one.

I would watch her teeth... she will need them floated more often because of the damage will cause her to chew more on the one side...
I had some experience with this after a horse was stung by bees (highly allergic) ... was damaged for a year and finally recovered about 75%..
There was still a little slack in one side of his face...

Thanks for the tips guys. I was watching her eat today and she seems to do OK. Not great but OK. She kind of shakes the hay around to get it eaten but it seems to be going in. I'll watch her weight and see how it goes.
