Hematoma while foaling

Recently my six year old mare foaled for the second time and during the process developed a hematoma the size of a large grapefruit. She was quite uncomfortable until the vet provided some pain killers. He palped her yesterday and the size had reduced by about one third. I told vet I do not want to breed back this year unless she is 100%. He feels pretty confident that within a week or two she will have absorbed the entire clot.
1. Anyone with a similar experience?
2. Any advice?
The vet said that this occurs more often with older mares and that there is nothing preventative that can be done. She foaled last year without a problem. This year's baby was huge..
