What is the cause?

Does anyone have additional scientific information or insight to the cause of this tragedy?

The necropsy results are due tomorrow. No point in speculating until then.

I wonder if this is horse botulism. Certain types of feed can harbor the bacterium that produces the toxin if they get wet. One of the symptoms is an inability to breath

What I'm hearing is the "toxic substance" is steroids injected by a vet who wasn't licensed to practice there.

rjamesbeam, I agree totally - what the heck does Palm Beach county sheriff find worthy of investigating? Sounds like a new sheriff is in order down there. I personally think they were injected with a substance that accidentally killed them - something that was tainted with a poison of some sort. It was supposed to enhance their performance, not kill them. I can't imagine the sadness this team feels as I am sure they are close to their horses in this sport. Very sad.

rjamesbeam, I agree. Suppose the horses had ingested something that had caused them to behave erratically and dangerously and players or trainers had been killed? The Sheriff's department needs to work with vets to find out what's going on, not least because, even if this was not an intentional poisoning, more animals and possibly human beings could be affected. Moreover, these horses represent valuable property. The Sheriff needs to rule out a crime.

21 horses die and the Palm Beach County Sheriff is not investigating! What kind of dummies do we have in this police department! You investigate any suspicious activity; that is just standard procedure. If it had been 21 children would they take the same approach? If it had been one police dept horses or a k-9 would they just have blown it off with no investigation????? Just another case of police indifference and avoidance of their sworn duty to protect citizens.

Sorry Laurierace. The speculation comments on Pedigree Query Form are posted on General Discussion under 21 dead at Wellington.
How improper was my judgement to attempt to prematurely obtain scientific chemical or biological information from a posting Clinical Veterinarian or a knowledgeable Florida State Official in this Horse Care section? I should have know to let the speculators "clear the air" first. Thanks for the ''Heads-up".

So you think that someone who posts on this forum knows exactly what caused this and is keeping that information to themselves until someone specifically asks for it?

The conclusions exhibited in your given responses are clairvoyant beyond all expectations. It is now " tomorrow", where are the results of the various autopsies to be found (as you forecast)?

We had a case near me where a woman I know came out in the morning to find three of her horses dead on the ground. No signs of paddling or disturbed dirt. No wounds, no contaminated feed, no anything. She spent a fortune trying to find out how they died, but never did. I surely hope that there will be a positive answer in this case.
