Hauling a pregnant mare

Postby ArchDandy » Fri May 29, 2009 12:53 pm

Ive done as much reading as I can on the subject, even found a nice article about it on ctba.com. From what I can tell, I shouldnt be worrying at all about the 1hr 15 min drive from Coalinga to Fresno, CA. However, my current situation is that I can haul my mare home on the 7th, on this day she is scheduled to have one last preg scan, and will probably be tranquilized. Should I take advantage of this and plan to haul her home after she is scanned? Or should I do it on a different day? I thought about this and wanted to present the idea to the manager at the farm, but first want to see if its even a good idea.

I've done it many times with no problems. If the mare doesn't travel well you can always put her on some regumate for 5-7 days.

I am assumng she is a difficult mare for a vet to need to sedate her for palpation/ ultrasound for a pregnancy check?... If that is the case then I would take advantage of her being sedated and ship her after the check. As "SM" said you could put her on regumate for a few days as a precaution. We breed the majority of our mares in KY and need to ship them 1000kms to get them home ;)

I never thought about how she was for that kind of thing...come to think of it, knowing that mare well, I can imagine their pain. The trailering part isnt the difficult part of this mare, she loads ok, snapped a lead last time, no big drama, but thought the sedative would make it more uneventful.

Hi ArchD,
It depends on the weather. If it's going to pop back to 100* like it was a few weeks ago I'd go the next morning early and get her home before it gets hot. We've had crazy weather. Fresno is my old stomping ground :)), still have friends there. I spent many happy days at Ram Tap.

The forecast for that day is 88/63. I'll ask the shipper if he has a fly net/instead of a blanket to put on her, if not I'll buy one before we go get her.

That's a short trip I wouldn't worry about it. If she's a grumpy mare I'd ship after check before drugs wear off :D

I kinda miss Fresno...lived there for 7yrs....Don't miss the heat thou!

Update: She definately was sedated when we put her in the trailer. She didnt appear stressed but balked a little going in. Once inside she didnt bat an eyelash til we got home, she then hopped off her trailer and drug me to her pen(which apparently she remembered)

Glad you got her home safely. I'll be interested to see her foal. You bred her to Redattore, right? Did you check out the Redattore babies at the farm when you picked up your mare?

The only redattore baby I saw while I was there was the one out of lucky c.h. the dam of lucky j.h. I did see all the ones they listed on their foal watch page. Lots of chestnut foals from bay mares, isnt that something?

I absolutely have to add this, as this morning I checked in on her again. I can totally tell shes not in season. Its like shes another horse. I'm not getting chewed up, she stands still, shes not trying to untie herself constantly. I just cant believe it, what a miracle! This is a mare that is used to being ridden hard, has not been ridden in 2 months being in a medium sized pen, and shes an angel :) Its almost scary...she might be plotting my demise.
