Treadworms

I read an articel in THE HORSE that recommended giving a dose of Iverectin to a mare within 24 hours of foaling so she will not pass treadworms to her foal in her milk..

I ususlly worm with Zimectermin Gold later on and wondered if the Praziguantel in the Zimectermin would do any harm that close to foaling or if I should stay with 100% Iverectin.

The Horse has a series of very in depth pieces on this subject. Tapeworms are not an issue in foals and praziquantel is NOT recommended until foals are weaned and grazing. Recommendations, besides ivermectin dose for the mare 24 hours prior to foaling (as if we all know when THAT is) is ivermectin or oxibendazole/fenbendazole 45-60 days old and every 60 days after that. Not praziquantel, nor moxidectin.

Stick with the plain ivermectin, its proven to work and be safe. I tell you, its so nice not to have to clean up their hind ends!

Madyln

Do you know of a series like The Horse parasite articles that deals with foal vaccinations?/

I don't know of any articles right off hand but I do know that they recommend you wait until foals are 9 months old now instead of 6 to give their first vaccinations. Their systems can't utilize the vaccines at 6 months.
