i saw a picture of the inside of mike dickinson's barn once and the stalls were made of chain link for socialability reasons. makes perfect sense to me so i'm wondering if anyone has had first-hand experience or would like to hear your thoughts in general. thanks.

Are they like the poutdoor "pens" we use at Del MAr? They are very useful for some horses!

I once had to assist when a three year old Morgan filly somehow managed to get a forefoot through a chain link stall. (Good thing she was so sensible about it! Wasn't even scratched!)

On the other hand, a really determined (or klutzy) horse can get stuck in practically any sort of stall or fence material.

Chain link is very expensive and only the heaviest guage should be used with horses.

I used to have a mare motel with chain link around the back and sides, not in the front. It was indeed heavy gage wire. It worked extremely well to keep mares from kicking through the bars. They do have a tendency to want to scratch on it in shedding season.

Be sure to order the chain link with the knuckle up on the top. I used to make it a point on the first of every month to walk the paddocks with a pair of pliers and turn down any barbs that worked their way up.

Make sure the contractor uses really heavy gage wire along the bottom retaining wire, or the wire will curl up over time on the bottom.
