Yes, "they" can. Whoever told you "they" couldn't is not up to speed on equine reproductive veterinary practice.

Fetal sexing is mostly done in KY. I'm sure its done many other places, but we never bothered because really what difference is it going to make..

If you are buying a pregnant mare at auction, the colt vs. filly can make a difference.

I can see how a sex call could be made late term but I had a KY Vet offer to make the call at 75 days. I declined because [1] i did not need the info and [2] he would not agree to refund my money if he was wrong.

Still it's a pretty good racket even if the vet does agree to a refund as he should be correct 50% of the time if he flips a coin.

It's called a 60 day sex scan. That's the earliest they can predict the sex of the foal.

There's a rule of thumb at an auction: if the consignor tells you the mare is carrying a colt, she is. If the consignor tells you that the mare wasn't fetal sexed, she is carrying a filly. :wink:
