uterine cysts?

Postby surprisewind » Sat Dec 12, 2009 8:53 pm

Does anyone have any experience with mares who have uterine cysts? My mare was diagnosed with a clump of 3 small cysts in the lumen. She's a 12 yr old mare who foaled once in 2005 (the 2004 breeding was live cover, and EASY from what I was told).
She was bred again live cover in 2007. I didn't own her then- she was not taken in for u/s or etc., and so they don't know if she didn't settle or she didn't carry to term, she just didn't have a foal the following year. Bred 2008, no foal.
The repro vet who found the cysts gave her a B instead of an A - he said he wouldn't be concerned about the cysts if she had not had that history. However, he thought she was worth a shot... she will go back in for cultures, cytology, blood work, etcetc in the spring.

Opinions from the real world?

I have a mare that had several uterine cysts, some the size of marbles, one the size of a walnut. Two years ago, we were unable to get her in foal and the cysts fingered as a contributing cause. Laser cyst removal was recommended by the KY repro vet at considerable cost. My TX vet said lets try something else first. He cycled her, when the cervix opened he reached in and palpated/pinched each cyst until it burst. I think he infused her with antibiotics. Six months later the uteris was still clean. The mare is in foal to Sun King due about Jan 20.

Wow, that's good to know. I asked this vet what the course of treatment is for cysts and he just shook his head. Perhaps the location is different? I'll have to call and ask.
thanks.

Uterine cysts can be removed using two different methods: 1) manual removal and 2) laser removal. I have had the manual removal done on one mare and it was only $50. She got in foal after. The laser removal quote was expensive. '

I have heard that after removal the cysts will grow back eventually.

Our older Sharpen Up mare has uterine cysts(she has three). She had been barren for four years and had been bred many times by her previous owners (they had her covered by two different stallions). We bought her thinking our vet could do something with her since she's really well bred, is a stakes producer and was a very nice racehorse. Anyway, he found her to have uterine cysts- we had to do things a bit differently with her. Before breeding season we put her on Regumate for a short time. After she was taken off, we gave her ludalytes to bring her "in," and the vet did the ultrasound several different days to determine the best cover date for her. We live in Illinois, so on the day she had to be bred we drove her to the stallion in Kentucky, got her bred and brought her right home. After, the vet had us give her HCG to ensure she ovulated. Then he sewed her up (on March 5th), we started and kept her on Regumate throughtout most of her pregnancy and she was ultrasounded April 4th and confirmed in foal on one cover. Normally they would be checked quite a bit sooner b/c of the concern about twins, but the vet felt that in this particular case it was worth the risk. Everything turned out well and in 2009 we had a beautiful healthy colt. Everyone was in great health. We just started early with her, because we weren't sure it would work, but it did. So it is possible!
