Shipping late term pregnancy

When's the latest one should ship during gestation? A month out or more if there's no signs evident? I've heard of people doing it a week out of due date. Is this acceptable?
I'm not talking about a 45 minute truck ride. More like a 2 or 3 day truck ride.

I hauled my mare the day before she foaled last year. 5 hour trip. Wouldn't recommend being THAT late. No problems - I was just a worry wart.

I have more concern about shipping a recently in-foal mare than shipping a late term mare.
I ship all my mares to the stallion barn 30+ days before they are due to foal.

I think, in my case, it really depends on the mare. I have a couple that are horribly nervous shippers and prior to coming to my farm, had history of aborting shortly after shipping, late term.

It takes 30 days for the mare to build up antibodies against any threats ie bacteria, viruses that are in the environment. Every environment is different regardless of the level of care and the facility itself so 30 days is the minimum I would ship at all. I don't think I would ship 2-3 days after the 8th, maybe 9th month.

Bumping this thread up. How do you guys feel about shipping a mare in foal 30 days prior to her due date, from CA to Texas?

For that kind of deal, I would only send a late term mare in a big box stall, on air ride, with stops every four hours, preferably climate controlled. I would also bump up her vaccinations 30 days or so prior to shipping, including strep/strangles, 5-way, phf, wnv, etc. JMO

I think that I would be bitting my nails all the way through. Calling every four hours to check up on the horse.

we just exported horses to India with due dates 30 days out and beyond and everyone landed and went thorough quarantine fine. TX to CA shouldn't be a issue.
bumping this again

Regarding shipping mares - what about mares and their new foals?
How far might one consider doing that reasonably? Thought is that it would be nice to have the mare drop a foal in WV for state bred purposes, but breed back to a Ky stallion? Pa or Md obviously much more reasonable.

(sorry if this is a repeat of another thread)

Personally I'd prefer not to ship mares and their new foals until they are at least seven days old. At this point the foal has some mobility and the mare is usually more comfortable post foaling. If its a silly mare then chemical assistance comes in handy
We are located appoximately 10 hours from Kentucky and have mares that foal here and ship back to KY for breeding.

thanks for refreshing this topic because it's a question I had myself. It seems the general rule is to not ship within 30 days of foaling. Is that different if it's an older mare?

My opinion is that some mare's, regardless of maturity, travel better than others. IMO it makes no sense to jeopardize the foal (older mare or not) by rushing to ship.
