EPM Vaccine

Postby griff » Thu Jun 17, 2010 3:01 pm

Just read a "The Horse" article that Ft Dodge has developed a EPM or Equine Protozoal Myelites vaccine that is avaiable in 35 states..

I had a mare that was diagnosed with Botulism last winter and received the full treatment for Botulism and did not improve.. A second Vet diagnosed and treated her for EPM.. That 30 day treatment is now complete and she seems to be on the mend.

I will definitely give it to my open mares and yearlings as this is a very bad parasite and not easy to kill.. And if you kill it you run the risk of the body then over reacting to the dead parasite.

The research is pretty iffy as to the effectiveness of the vaccine. Most are not recommeding it. It has been around for many years and hardly anyone uses it.

I thought Ft. Dodge had taken it off the market. Used it for some time when it first came out years ago and it was not effective, horses still came down with EPM. Maybe this is a new one?
