tail rubbing

Most are aware this can be caused due to dirty sheath, worms, or failure to rinse all soap out of tails. Even when those things are cleared up, some horses persist in rubbing their tails.

Have had good success with spraying Listerine (I use generic version - the stinky gold kind) on the tail and rubbing in to the bone. Used on my yearling colt.

From what I researched, Pyrantel Pamoate, Ivermectin, Oxibendazole, and Fenbendazole are all effective against Pinworms. My yearling is regularly wormed with those wormers in rotation.

When I feed a little garlic powder it seems to expel the pinworms and my horses itch their anus area which of course drives me mad. Years ago in Australia we used Mercuric Oxide around the anus and tail base to ease the symptoms but I am sure that now it's unavailable. Only this morning I grabbed a slab of Vaseline Jelly and shoved it unmercifully into one of my geldings' ass end and around his tail base to relieve his itch ,I think that it worked. Let's see if he runs any better for it tomorrow night.

Noxema type stuff works pretty well around the anus to kill the itch - it's the camphor.
