As soon as he gets to the point where he confuses himself, he changes the subject. He usually lasts about 2 to 3 weeks.

The head of the pedigree, which is always the Male Line, will be one of closely bred tbs from son to son. The cross which must be a mare, is brought in only across the Tail or Female Line.

I am referring to the outright cross, & not the half & half product obtained by way of a mare from a mating of the same stallion with an unrelated mare.

Note that the cross was made on the Tail Grand Dam, the most Important tb in the breeding next to the Foundation tbs. There is only one reason for any breeder in making the cross, that being to inject hybred vigor into the blood.
Those without sin cast the first stone.

Pedigrees from the Egyptian Agricultural Organization--pedigrees of Egyptian bred Arabians--show the female line on top.

This has always made great sense to me, since the eye is drawn to the top. Most horses of any breed tend to have well-known male lineages. Emphasizing the female line puts emphasis upon that which is likely to be lesser known, and stresses the importance of quality throughout a pedigree.

Seattle Slew TC winner is an example of Inheriting the Male Line of son to son. which is Nearco, Nasrullah 4 X 4, BR, Boldnesian, Bold Resoning.

SS dam My Charmer by Poker is the outcross made on Tale Female, which is Prince Rose, Princequillo, Round Table, Poker.

SS was a NFB from a mating of Ph. over Prince Rose, thus SS Inherited his Hybred vigor from this outcross mating.

Louis

Even when you exclude all of the horses in Seattle Slew's male line, if you do not think that the genes from Fair Charmer, Myrtle Charm, Crepe Myrtle and Myrtlewood, not to mention the full sisters Striking and Busher had anything to do with the success of Seattle Slew you are beyond help.

Btw. Seattle Slew was born before 1975, in a time when still and almost all horses were "NFB".

Louis,

"Hybrid vigor" results when two inbred, largely unrelated lines are crossed.

Seattle Slew is inbred 4 X 4 to Nasrullah, from top and bottom of his pedigree. Both top and bottom have lines to Man O'War and Swynford. This is not an example of crossing inbred lines and getting hybrid vigor.

What Seattle Slew was was one of the first horses to carry the genes of most of the best sires of the 1960s--Bold Ruler, Hail to Reason, Native Dancer's sire Polynesian, Round Table, and some very good female ancestors.

SS was more inbred than his carrier pigeons.

Secretariat TC winner is another example of Inheriting the Male Line from son to son, thru Ph., Pharos, Nearco, Nasrullah, Bold Ruler.

Secretriat's dam Somethingroyal by Princequillo provided the outcross thru Tail Female, which is Prince Rose, Pricequillo.

Secretariat Inherited his hybred vigor thru his Ph. over Prince Rose outcross mating. This outcross mating of Ph. over Prince Rose is almost a carbon copy of the same mating that produced SS.

Louis doesn't understand the concept of hybrid vigor. He picks up terms that he thinks apply and re-defines them for his own purposes.

I've always been fascinated by the fact that Louis uses racing pigeons as an example of his breeding experience. Well, I thought since I've raised pigs that I could provide this very well written and authoritative explanation of how inbreeding and rotational crossbreeding can be very productive. Of course, there is no way this would work with the TB, but, just maybe, it will help Louis to understand that his mixed up definition of hybrid vigor is another loose horse for him to catch.

Louis

Genetically the Nasrullah/Prince Rose cross is 2X3 with Secretariat and 4X5 with Seattle Slew, hardly a carbon copy, do you just disregard the genes contributed by the intervening horses in Seattle Slew's case?

No! Secretariat's Tail Female is Somethingroyal, Imperatrice, Cinquepace, Assignation, Cinq A Cept, Rackety Coo......You know, the carriers if the very important mtDNA factor, something a sire has nothing to do with.
