Gelding Vrs Filly or Colt

Postby ShawnaJoy » Wed Feb 27, 2008 11:07 am

Do 2 yr old geldings go for less than fillys or colts at auction, even if they have a better pedigree?

pedigree dont matter too much if your a gelding :) A gelding would sell well if he showed he had talent and ability just like any other horse.

pedigree still tells a story about the horse even if he's a gelding.

Shawna....since you have time take a look at the Fasig site sales results for last year's Texas sale. Give you a better idea for what you're asking.

Thanks Yall :)

And, yes, I've looked at the past years actually, lol, and also compared pedigrees. It looks like some geldings even if they have a better pedigree as far as racing is concerned, are selling for less than fillys or colts with inferior pedigrees?

That's why I was wondering, cause I want the best for the money, lol and also I don't plan on breeding and I would like to go the gelding route because I'd like to add to the herd, every year and I'd prefer them to all get along.

Also, when, I was wondering, cause when I reviewed the selected 2 yr old sales, I didn't even see one gelding and I was wondering if they go for lower amount even with a good pedigree, because their is no option to keep the line going.

Many of those who raise horses for sales - particularly select sales - will leave a colt intact, and leave the option of gelding to the new owner.....so if you see a young horse at auction that is already gelded, be sure to talk to the seller about WHY it was done when you do your pre-sale viewing. There could have been a medical reason, but it also could be that the horse has some serious temperment issues.

Hi Lucy,
Thanks for the reply. I was wondering about an early medical reason, because they are just two year olds and some younger when counting months.

I didn't think about the temperment issues, so I'm glad you mentioned it and I will definitely ask about the reasons for the gelding.

I just thought they were still to young to have the stallion behaviors, but I read that those behaviors can start after around 18 months, I guess they could have learned some already.

I would not want a 2 yo gelding because I don't believe in cutting before the fall/winter of the two year old year. Developmentally, it disrupts their hormones. And I would say, emphatically, yes, geldings will sell for less than SIMILARLY BRED, SIMILAR QUALITY colts or fillies, in my opinion.
