Galopin's sire?

Ellen Parker says that the stud groom at the place Flying Duchess was bred claimed that Galopin's sire was not Vedette, but The Flying Dutchman. That would change the TB world to its very roots.

Have any of y'all seen anything else about this anywhere else? As a rumor, it isn't even mentioned on TB Heritage, and they are usually pretty good about indicating questions in pedigrees.

Of course, Ellen Parker also thinks that Graustark was not by Ribot, but by Swaps; she may be looking for controversy.

I think Ellen also thinks Eclipse was sired by someone other than his sire of record.

The old rumored sire is Shakespeare.
To me, that would be crazy cool. Especially when you consider that Eclipse is from a mare out of Regulus. Then, when you see all the Cade and Blank mares.
Mogul, Janus, Old England, etc....
Well, that is my thinking on the matter. LOL!
Regardless, we will never know.

As for Galopin, wouldn't that mean that The Flying Dutchman covered his own daughter? And that anything male tail to Galopin would be Byerley Turn not Darley Arabian?

Yup and yup.

It would shift a huge number of horses to the Buzzard/Alexander Mare matings. And it might well have influenced the presence of the jump in the St. Simon line. The Flying Dutchman is already present in jumpers through Dollar. Buzzard/Alexander Mare have another line of jumpers through Thormanby, which would bring in Bend Or. Bronze is in the dam lines of many good jumping horses.

Maybe some time in the future, the Herod y and the Eclipse Y can be distinguished, and we'll know. Wouldn't it be interesting if each of them had a different one of the Y variants, which could be used to determine if St. Simon line males (of which there are fewer and fewer) are Herod or Eclipse--or Byerley Turk and Darley Arabian.

Don't they already have some Eclipse DNA from some hair that was saved from the horse?(or something like that)

The scientists at the Royal Veterinary College have used his preserved skeleton to do biomechanical studies.

Their conclusions from that are rather interesting. They say part of his success is that he was so average. Legs not too long or too short.

Let me look and see if the internet link is in my bookmarks.
