A question for all: Genuine Risk is a daughter of Exclusive Native. Can we say that Genuine Risk carries the Exclusive Native sire line or is that incorrect because she does not have Exclusive Native's Y chromosome?

true Nicks and eNicks both use the production of mare's "sire line" with the sire line of the proposed stalion, and that, to me, say's a mare does have a "sire" line, even if very few carry a Y chromosome.

Mares do not carry a Y chromosome at all. Zero mares carry a Y chromosome, not very few.

You do realize that Genuine Risk has been dead for several years, right?

I think it is correct to say that normal mares don't carry a Y chromosome.
And normal would be the phenotype matching the genotype.
Abnormalities happen.

Yes they do. Klinefelter Syndrome in humans is one.

So, did Genuine Risk carry the Raise A Native sire line? (assuming that she was a normal female with the XX situation in her last homologous pair)

The way I've always thought of it, is a sireline is direct male descent.
Male to male to male.
However other folks may not agree.
diomed:
I was thinking of pseudo hermaphrodites. Genetic males that have a block to the action of testosterone, and physically present as female. Infertile females.

She did not carry his Y chromosome if that is the case. However, other genes could have expressed.

Of course, to a man, a sire line can be very important. Sometimes being a woman makes more sense.

all horses have a sire and sire line

Isn't it correct to say that all horses be they colts or fillies have a particular sire and sire line?

But in humans the Y chromosome has many forms, and carries different genes. Not the same situation with horses.

Should I include Genuine Risk as one of the 18 horses that won the roses while carrying the Ran sire line or should I leave her off the list and reduce the list to 17. 17 male line descendants and one filly without the Y chromosome.

She IS RAN Sire line. She just can't pass it on.

As I understand it, from a handicapping standpoint having RAN in the 'tail male' pedigree (sire line) is significant. Since the genetics of that signficance cannot be attributed to superiority of RAN's Y chromosome (the Y being the only common factor to all members of a 'sire line' but having no functional variance in the domestic horse) I see no reason why Genuine Risk should be excluded, especially since she's only one generation removed from RAN.
