Pedigree Query

All the time I hear about American bloodlines only being suited for the shorter distances but this horse has quite a lot of American lines in his pedigree and he still is going the distance:

Or does he actually have American horses in his pedigree that were distance (bred) horses?

Well the Mr. P, Danzig lines represented certainly can throw a lot of speed, but interestingly, they were also successful with some runners at a distance - including some by sons, like Machiavellian and Green Desert. Roberto line is known for stayers - one of the strongest from a US bred line in recent decades. Green Desert, being from the blue hen Courtly Dee, had enough potency to sire any kind of horse.

Guitar Pete already raced two miles at three years of age. I often read and hear that American horses already struggle with a distance of 1.5 miles. That 1 and a quarter is about their maximum distance.

I think it's really more a question of training. American training methods serious limit horses that have the capability of running longer of actually doing so. Horses are not trained to run long, long races don't fill, trainers train for short speed, fewer longer races written - vicious cycle.

And there in a nutshell is why it's all but impossible to make any useful assessment of the genetic propensities of an American sire and assign him a truly meaningful "chef-de-race" status. Proof of his ability to affect races beyond 9 furlongs is scant at best.

Along those lines, Bold Ruler is listed as a "Brilliant/Intermediate" as a sire, with a personal 2.68 dosage index. Yet his full brother Independence was a champion steeplechase who was able to win at 20f.

That is a very substantial difference in distance ability in two horses with the same sire and dam!

Nasrullah's classified as a "Brilliant" CDR sire but more than a few of his progeny won in top company at 12f and longer - Bald Eagle, Flying Fury, Jaipur, Musidora, Nashua, Nasram, Nathoo, Nearula, Never Say Die, Zucchero...

Independence just proved that his sire was capable of getting top class stamina with Miss Disco too.
