Pedigree Query

If you were looking for breeding stock & hoping to produce turf horses who could go the classic distances, what would you look for, in addition to the basics you'd require for any breeding stock?

[If I phrased the question badly, feel free to re-phrase if you understood what I meant & then answer. I can learn from that, too.]

Do you mean bloodlines or physical characteristics?

I've seen enough of a trend in the Indy Mood babies that I think long, turf races are where a majority of them might shine... unfortunately the problem is that they usually run in short races on the dirt.

Indy Mood is by A.P. Indy and out of Super Luna, by In Reality... I'm not a strong enough pedigree person to look at his pedigree and pinpoint where all of that might be coming from, but I've seen this in crosses of his with different mares, so I think it's coming from him somewhwere.

I'm sure nobody out there follows the Indy Mood babies quite as much as I do so this is something that all these short-dirt entering folks might not even be thinking about, and the ones running now were conceived before we owned him, so I don't even know who most of the owners are... and I'm not going to call someone I don't know and suggest what they do with their horse, so I guess there's a lot of speculation here on my part that will probably go un-answered.

Look at some of their pedigrees and if you see something that makes sense for the sire(s) you have in mind then you have a place to start looking.

I think if you watch the mixed sales or broodmare sales you can sometimes find an import at a bargain because these horses are viewed as turf horses and and prices reflect (not always, but there are some deals).

I agree with Roguelet also that there is pobably some nice turf stock out there, but nobody ever tries it. It just may be that some of the stock you already have put to a turf sire would work.

To me she has a turf pedigree. Well bred mare, not sure if she ran on grass or not, in Penn they do both.

Thanks for the help -- I've been on the Barbaro threads & out with my own horses for the past couple days & neglecting my own question.

Roguelet, I mean both conformation & pedigree, but admit I was mostly thinking of lines that seem to gravitate toward the turf.

Then again, your point that horses bred to go long on the turf often are asked to go short on the dirt, which might be part of the reason I'm confused. [The rest of the reasons I'm confused are just too numerous to post!]
