What Happened in the Risen Star?

Postby geowarrior » Sat Feb 10, 2007 3:55 pm

Fairgrounds replay isn't working properly - there was a spill, Circular Quay didn't finish itm, Notional won it. Anybody actually see it on a screen wider than one inch? What happened?

I heard rather than saw it, but it seems the one horse clipped heels at the top of the stretch & dropped the rider. The horse ran on & seems okay, jockey walked off under his own power.

None of this seemed to involve CQ, who didn't show up at all. I'll have to scan the replay for excuses later.

Well from what I could hear, as I couldn't see anything, Slew's Tizzy and Circular Quay were blocked, and Slew's Tizzy clipped heels but I don't know who with. Thanks Lucy for telling us that the jockey walked off because he was still down by the time the minute sized replay ended. Slew's Tizzy was running on and seemed to be ok but it would be nice to hear the impressions of the 56 inch TV crowd.

Slew's Tizzy clipped w/ a tiring Makeithapencaptain. Didn't seem to me like it affected the outcome. Imawildandcrazyguy turned in the most impressive performance, finishing 2d after more or less making a left turn coming out of the gate & running into Scat Thief. (JMO)

The TVG recap (which will no doubt repeat ad nauseum through the evening) says ST clipped with Circular Quay, but it is very clear from the video that it was Makeithapencaptain. CQ was indeed blocked on the turn, but was not involved in the spill and had nothing in the stretch.

The jockey was not only okay, he came back and won the 10th. :D

Only thing I'd add is that CQ was behind slew's tizzy & avoided the fallen jockey by veering out thus ending whatever chance he " may " have had although it appeared to me he was beaten badly even without the incident. Imawildandcrazyguy was looking very strong closing down the stretch.

I saw the race several times on TVG and it appeared to me that Circular Quay looked full of run and looking for room when he was blocked. Don't forget he's a deep closer.

I thought circular quay was dramatically affected. He had easily moved up within contention at the lane, was completely blocked and then had a jockey fall in front of him, which he checked severely and suddenly had to veer outward about 6 or 7 paths. After all that, with a firm hold from Johnny V. he managed to gallop into 5th. :?

"Circular Quay had no chance after taking up severely in the stretch along the inside when the colt in front of him, Slew's Tizzy, clipped heels with the retreating pacesetter Makeithapencaptain and lost jockey James Graham. Circular Quay took up to avoid the fallen rider and was not persevered with after the close call. Meanwhile, Notional, racing four or five paths off the rail for Robby Albarado, burst away from the pack leaving the eighth pole and won by 2 1/4 lengths in a slow time of 1:48 for the 1 1/16-mile distance.

"Coming off the turn after completing six furlongs in 1:11 4/5, the front-runners started to lose ground and the field bunched up. Circular Quay, ridden by John Velazquez, trailed the field on the clubhouse turn but was making up ground while charging along the inside when the field reached the stretch. Running room disappeared quickly after that, leading to Graham's fall. Circular Quay lost all momentum avoiding the accident but gathered himself late and ran on to finish fifth.

“It all happened right next to me," Velazquez said. "I said my prayers, I didn’t go down. That’s what I’ve got to say about this race.”"

CQ was stopped when the accident happened.....it was remarkable he finished where he did.

CQ had a handful of horse. Amazing he finished 5th. With no trouble he gallops

Westwon Ran big too. Considering he hasnt ran since Keeneland.

Do you think Johnny V should of had CQ probably in the middle of the track instead of on the rail. I thought he saved ground all the way on the rail but going into the far turn i would of started to angle this horse out some so i wouldnt get stopped by all the tiring horses.

I think he needed to save ground as I dont think CQ is really a route horse. I think he will make little to no impact in regard to 3yo Derby contenders.
