Super-Lazy A.P. Indy Question

Postby Roguelet » Wed Feb 28, 2007 9:16 pm

OK, I am SWAMPED these days. I have subscriptions to The Blood-Horse AND the TB Times, and they just keep piling up in the corner; can't remember when I last actually read one. I know basically zero about the horses heading to this year's KY Derby, and I don't have the time to catch up.... SO, I'm going to be super-lazy and ask you guys to do my research for me.

Can anyone give me a heads-up on the A.P. Indy babies and grandbabies that are pointing toward the KY Derby? I'd be EVER so greatful!

I don't know if this is of interest to you Roguelet, but I've been making a table of Derby contenders for a little research project, and although it's not nearly complete, I did notice that A.P. Indy is the BMS of three major contenders - Ravel, Any Given Saturday and Adore The Gold. Not bad, eh?

Ok Roguelet, according to the Nominations list in Bloodhorse, here are the A.P. Indy sons (and daughter) nominated to the TC: Uncle Indy, Deliberately, Owen, Pavarotti, Profiteer, Rags to Riches (filly), Samhoon, Indy Traffic, Mandurah, Marchfield, Needham's Fort, Counselled. I don't know any of the colts, but of course Rags to Riches is a major force in the fillies and mares division.

Pulpit nominees - Righteous, Rock Pulpit, Sightseeing, Storm Breeze
Malibu Moon - Vista Moon
Jump Start - Bold Start, Sir Whimsey
Golden Missile - Cobalt Blue
Aptitude - Oceanography, Augment, Great Hunter, Level Red, Tu Sandy

I'm not sure if I got all the A.P. Indy sons comprehensively, but this is what I could come up with in a short time.

There's buzz for Cobalt Blue, and obviously quite a bit of buzz for Great Hunter, who I liked as a two year old. I've also seen Makeithapencaptain (hate that name) run against my Citi Smoke in the Lecomte (won by Hard Spun) and in the Risen Star. After a couple of monster wins early on, he has disappointed in the aforementioned stakes not showing anything in the Lecomte (although he did beat Smokie, but then again, everybody did) and leading then falling back later in the Risen Star where he caused a fall when Slew's Tizzy clipped heels with him as he tired.

I would expect to see AP Indy show up on the bottom side of quite a few super horses in years to come, he his the heir apparent to the great books of mares that stallions such as Secretariat and Storm Cat have enjoyed. With the mares/families he is covering--- he will be a powerful force for many years. Good luck with your stallion.
best regards Brendan

geowarrior: Thank you so much! I have wanted to get that list together for a while now and just haven't found the time to put into it. Hopefully a few of those will still be going strong when May rolls around! I love to see those A.P. Indy's in the Belmont, in particular, but if one wants to win the KY Derby and the Preakness before they get there... more power to them!

bcassidy: Interesting that you should mention that. Just recently, for some unknown reason, I have had several people comment to me that our man has the makings of a broodmare sire. Of course, only time will tell...

On a side note; did I read on another thread somewhere that you have a "just turned one year old?" I have one of those too, which is one reason for the above mentioned complete lack of time. I hope yours isn't as "into everything" as mine is right now. It's a neat age but it can scare you to death, too!

Great Hunter (Aptitude) very nice winner of the Robert B. Lewis stakes today over Sam P. (a tough runner who didn't give up). Beautiful move around the turn for Great Hunter, and it wasn't exactly a ground saving trip overall.

Roguelet----Yes I do have a one year old little boy---I got put out to stud very late as I turned fifty several months ago.
I love my little guy and I hope he enjoys this stuff as much as I do, if so---we will have a lot to talk about.
Glad to hear about your child.... I don't even remember what life was like before we had our little guy. I hope your child is as much a blessing to you as our little guy is to us....Take care. brendan

Any A.P. Indy sons/grandsons still on the trail? I have paid absolutely zero attention this year...

Great Hunter, fifth in the Bluegrass, but that was a weird race and the upside is that it didn't take anything out of him.

Sightseeing is very good but likely won't aim for the Derby, and Cobalt Blue was looking very good until a disappointing run in the Illinois Derby and his connections are still thinking about it.

Those (Great Hunter, Sightseeing, and Cobalt Blue) are the top contenders, and Level Red is also a nice horse. However they tried blinkers on him last time out and he bombed, so his connections are reviewing everything.

Agree with Brendan's contribution to this thread wholeheartedly.

It would be difficult to find a horse with his pedigree. His father is a Triple Crown winner. His Grandfather is a Triple Crown winner. His mother is a reines-de-course as is both his grandmothers. He has 10 reines in the first four generations as well as 11 chefs. The first 3 mares on the bottom are double copies and his father is out of a double copy mare. Just counting casually, the mares in the first 4 generations have produced around 40 stakes winners.

He has the second fastest time in The Belmont. He is free of Northern Dancer and Mr. Prospector. He will be the greatest Broodmare Sire of all times. (IMHO). I challenge anyone who can find a stallion with better credentials. Hopefully, he will live up to the promise.
